It's a challenge because cyclists on the Tour need to consume roughly 8,000 calories a day. They have traditionally scoffed large portions of meat in order to replace lost protein, which helps muscle recovery. Animal products also replace missing iron, which produces haemoglobin that helps transport oxygen around the body.

I was so excited to see this but then I read on.
The reporter obviously doesn't understand what a Vegan is, though, because:

That pretty much makes this article entire pointless. The interesting and newsworthy aspect of the piece was that he was vegan. Now, he just has a strict diet. Woohoo.

It's easy for us to be disappointed about this cyclist including salmon in his diet, however can we also look at the bright side of this story too

Most cyclists do not eat anything close to a plant based diet so the fact that this guy is eating entirely differently than his competitors is quite amazing and great. This very well may encourage more cyclists to ditch the steak and eat more plants during competitions as well as training.

Anytime anyone eats less animals and animal products they should be applauded for those efforts.

At least he's doing more than most. :/

As for the getting 8000 kcal, I don't think any of them do, ones body can't process food that quickly, only about 250 kcal an hour. It's just about taking in as much energy as possible, and keeping your glycogen stores up.

I love(d) them too, however, they're horribly unhealthy. I lost 15 pounds over a month and a half when I cut them out of my diet.

It would be possible, but time-consuming. Smoothies/shakes and nuts, as someone said above, would replace a lot of the nutrients. You can throw a ton of calories into a shake and down it pretty fast. Even if it tastes bad (not that it has to), it's pretty quick, and therefore not too painless.

But yeah, this is totally plausible. When you think that the average adult male eats something like 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day, more if they're over-eaters, this makes plenty of sense. Swimmers are the same way. High-intensity cardio will suck the life out of you if you don't eat like that.

Vega products are vegan. That guy ( can't remember his name right now) is a triathelete and vegan. He has several books out. My husband is a cyclist, eats about 6000 calories a day and is vegetarian during the cycling season. You have to remember that when you are on the bike, you are eating high calorie bars, drinks, and gels.
