After what can only be described as an 'awful family event' this week (death would have been easier to deal with), I am not able to sleep. For those of you who don't know, I work in mental health, have a GREAT relationship with my doctor, and am pretty on top of things.

I went to my doc yesterday and he was visibly shaken when he saw me. I have a Hx of depression, but have been able to be off of my antidepressants for a couple of years. Sleep is a very big deal to me.

I left with a scrip for Ambien (3 days and then as needed-15 total) and my antidepressant to start again if the depression persists and is more than an adjustment thing. I'm totally open to that possibility.

I took the Ambien last night because I was desperate and only got about 4 hours of sleep. I'm a super sleeper normally. My sleep average is generally in the department of 9-10 to feel really good. I got 0 the night before last.

I've read mixed reviews online and heard mixed experiences from users in my profession. Anyone here with personal experience? Will tonight be better? I know that this is a huge wall of text, but my brain is just not firing today. I feel only marginally better than yesterday, still not able to work, which I desperately love. Blah.

ambien didn't work at all for me, at 5 or 10mg. it worked well for another family member for ~6 months, but she had episodes of eating while she was "asleep"/unaware or whatever. her kids had to stop her. my sister was fine for the first few days, then experienced a visual hallucination. it scared the crap out of me. i hope you have a better weekend and are able to get some sleep!

Ambien worked well for me. Try it again tonight. I wish you a lot of luck!

I have done weird stuff when I took Ambien. I cannot remember what the strength was. I'm am okay with maybe a half pill, but prefer not to have it around. It's nice when it works, though. I go to sleep.

Thanks. I'm hoping tonight goes better. I've kept myself very occupied today and am feeling pretty exhausted.

Let us know how it goes because I've tried quite a few different types of sleeping pills and nothing seems to work. I've even taken double the dosage then what it says is safe and that doesn't even cut it. So I'll try it if it's worth it..

Last night was better. I got a solid 8 and almost feel human again. Now I just need to get my appetite back and another decent night of sleep.

i've had several falls and even respiratory distress (had to call a rapid response) after giving patients ambien. unless they are already taking it, i make sure they're aware of the side effects. i'd much rather give restoril, because i don't want to dig some feeble old person off the floor after a fall. i would, of course, never take it myself under any circumstance i can imagine (nor would i take restoril).

I would have said the same thing a week aga, papaya. Truly. This has not been an ordinary week. I'll take one more night and then go back to my ol sleepy self, I'm hoping.

Ambien worked pretty well for helping me sleep, but I sometimes had trouble waking up the next day. Like I'd be groggy well into the afternoon the next day, even after getting 9-10 hours of sleep.

I haven't slept for a solid 8 hours on one stretch in over 20 years. I can't even imagine what it would be like to get that kind of rest.

Mrsschu2u, I hope the issues resolve.

Thanks all. I'm glad that we are going into my weekend off. I need a couple more days before returning to work. I have not had any grogginess or side effects. I'm a little better than I was yesterday, and have confidence that I will be even better tomorrow.
