Hello,

I have been a vegan for about 6 years. I think it actually started when i got sick and vomited my dinner. After that i became sensitive to the taste of meat and started being very picky about animal products, eventually i stopped eating meat all together. Altho to this day i still eat salmon, but on rare occasions, when eating out. I eat dairy products like cheese, don't really like the taste of milk, but occasionally i make cereal with it for breakfast.

I'm 21 now, i'm very lazy when it comes to cooking, and overall i lack the knowledge about nutrition. I feel like my diet is very one sided.

I can go for days eating nothing but cheese sandwitches, with some tomato slices, maybe some pickle on it.
I also eat alot of potatoes and spaghetti. With potatoes i generally just add whatever i have in the fridge like beans, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots. I buy frozen carrots, peas and beans, should i switch to canned? The thing is i live alone and generally canned foods go bad before i can finish them, so it feels like too much of a waste... But the vegetables i add to my plate is only like 1/4.
With spaghetti i just add bolognese sauce (without the meat ) and cheese, nothing more.
At least once a month i eat a vegan pizza, but it's basically the same... bread, cheese and some vegetables on top.
And occasionally salmon, which i mentioned before.

For snacks i eat nuts (i've read they are good source of protein, but then again i eat alot of cheese so that should cover my protein needs?), potato chips... nothing else really comes to mind.

I keep away from sweets like candy and chocolaty things as i don't really care for them, i drink coffee without sugar, but i add one teaspoon when drinking tea.

Besides my worry if i get enough nutrients and vitamins, i'm concerned about the amount of carbs i eat, since i mostly eat bread, potatoes, spaghetty. I know that carbs turn into sugar too quickly, and it messes up insulin levels. I don't have much knowledge about nutrition but hell, that can't be good.

For the past few years i have feeling alot more tired, i get headrushes quite often. Might these problems be related to my eating havits?

I don't know what else to say, since my diet really is so one-sided.

I hope you guys can help me with whatever suggestions, info or links.

Not sure if this post is serious. You say you have been a vegan for 6 years, but continue to eat fish and cheese?? You also use milk for your cereal? You aren't vegan.

And yes, you are eating an unhealthy, unbalanced diet. Read a little about nutrition and try to make the effort to learn to cook using whole, unprocessed foods. Buy veganomicon, there are some great, healthy, easy recipe ideas in that book, has helped me loads.

I'm sorry, i didn't even know there were categories like vegan or vegetarian. I guess i'm a vegetarian then, since i eat cheese.
As for salmon, i think i still eat it because of the nice smokey taste when they make it in the smoke oven.

Thanks for the book recommendation!

I think you are an omnivore who doesn't eat meat much. A fish is an animal too. Basically, what you are eating is not sustainable and you are missing some serious nutrients if you only eat what you put in your post. I was lazy in the kitchen too until I became veg*n and now I love cooking. Learn to cook from scratch with whole foods. You only seem to be aware of "carbs" and "protein". Read about nutrition, which foods give the essential vitamins and minerals, and essential aminos in plant protein.

Perhaps try signing up to a free health tracking site like sparkpeople. you can set up a plan, it will give you ideas and recipes for healthier eating etc..

Is this a serious post? Ditch the animal products and start eating more fruits and vegetables.

Also, meat eaters aren't allowed on this board so if you want to stay ditch the fish.

Wow, some of those replies were really harsh. This is a fairly young person and they are obviously on here to learn from experienced people. I did not know people are not allowed on this site if they eat animals. I would think people would like to share their knowlege and be encouraging instead of so exclusive. I have only stopped eating meat for two months and learn something new everyday from this site. This site is helping me continue eating a plant based diet and I think encouragement is a better way to go than criticizing people.

what i've learned on this site that there is many "definitions" of veganism.
i think the main one or most agreed on one is
-no meat
-no animal products (this means no eggs, milk, gelatin, honey, etc.)
-don't use products containing animal ingredients or products that are tested on animals.
-no leather/suede/fur/etc.

*you are in no way a vegan, IN FACT because you eat fish you aren't even a vegetarian.

being "fairly young" has nothing to do with the confusion. I just turned 19....

Yes i am planning on becoming a vegetarian. I want to it clear, i only eat fish when eating out, which doesn't happen a lot, this year maybe only 3-4 times. Mainly this is because in my country i simply don't have vegetarian restaurants to go to. So really why all this hate over this?
I don't think i'm ready to become a vegan just yet, since i really like cheese.
I actually just watched the documentary Forks Over Knives, it just gave me so much willpower to start eating whole foods. I found some good websites for vegetarian foods and tomorrow i'm going shopping.

Edit: So ban me from this forum if you need to, seems like this place is full of negativity, so i don't think i even want to come back anymore.

This forum is open to all nationalities, but because the majority are from America or UK a cultural difference isn't the first thing we think of. For that I apologize for my harsh thought reading your opening post!
Here on veggieboards, we're kind of used to people pretending to be veg just to spam and get whatever kick they do out of it, so yeah, your post looked very suspicious.

Please don't leave if you're really interested in being veg!

I didn't mean to be negative, but when you first sign up the rules of the forum do state this is a place for vegetarians or people interested in becoming a vegetarian only. If you are planning to stop eating fish and become a vegetarian then that's okay

Your first post was very confusing because you called yourself a vegan while saying you eat meat and cheese. It's a little bit like calling yourself a virgin while saying you have sex

thanks for clearing that up. your original post sounded like you were planning on continuing to eat fish on rare occasion. i don't think anyone meant to offend you.

to answer your question, you could start by varying your basics. instead of cheese sandwiches all the time try using hummus or guacamole (or anything else) spread on your bread and adding sliced veggies. when you have pasta, add lots of veggies to your sauce and increase the sauce to pasta ratio. frozen veggies work just fine for that. just by doing that you'll get a bit more variety in your diet without really doing much different. but also try experimenting with new recipes once a week or so and you should be able to find some other things you like that are quick and easy

Agh, come on dude, I appreciate sensitivity in a person but your taking things a bit far with this one by calling the correction of this person's status "harsh".
This is a 21 year old adult who could've looked up what a vegan was on the internet at any time over the last 6 years that they claim they've been a vegan for, but hasn't bothered to do that. Then they join a forum without reading the FAQ. They have to learn sometime and Mooch gave plenty of good suggestions.

I'd have to disagree here and say that no one made any character judgments or negativities towards you; they simply told you that you are an omnivore. You were an omnivore before you made your post here, too. No harm done. If you consider someone telling you what you are (i.e. omnivorous) to be "hateful" then don't attack the bearer of bad news and become a vegetarian arleady.

We don't really need to hear your excuse for eating sea animals, either - part of the forums rules is that you can join if you have interest in becoming vegetarian, which I hope you do, but you are not allowed to speak about the animals which you eat. Thanks!!
