Rie: Strict vegetarian only alters his or her diet to remove all animal foods (usually not including honey), while vegans seek to avoid all products (including honey, leather, silk, wool, etc.)

It was nice to hear some contrary opinions on the pesco- thing. I agree with the dissenters. It's an oxymoron.

I agree that pesco-vegetarian is an oxymoron because they aren't really vegetarians.

However, while I just chuckle at those folks, I get really mad when people call themselves vegetarians and eat fish (or chicken!) etc. It just causes problems for those of us who use the name vegetarian but don't want to be served any flesh. If I had a nickel....

austin: Trust me, I agree. There was a thread called vegetarians and fish in which this was made abundantly clear.

I agree with Kurm. To be ANY kind of vegetarian, one must abstain from ALL flesh...so, although they are not your typical omni...they are no kind of vegetarian.

*heh* Now that summer's here, I plan to turn into a sweetcornarian

But if I only do it on a temporary basis can I be considered a true sweetcornarian? What about commitment?

I don't use the "nothing with a nervous system" or "nothing with a face" descriptions for what I eat because shellfish doesn't have a face and I don't think shrimp has a nervous system (I'm not sure about that though, I flunked biology in school....) and I don't eat those things either. The easiest way that I've found to describe what I eat is: "if you can buy a seed for it and grow it in the ground, then I can eat it". I've had only one person say "what about fish?" and I made some cutsie remark about not being able to find fish seeds or wondering how you grow a fish plant. THAT usually gets the point across pretty easily (with a bit of humor tossed in) as most people know what things are grown from the ground vs. the things that are not.

Before you say, "what about hydroponing?" Understand that that counts, too in the relm of all things edible. I just use the ground analagy because most people understand seed + ground = things allowable to eat. If I said "seed + water..." they'd think "fish!" and then it'd take forever to clear the confusion and I'd be right back to where I started.

If they go into "what about *insert term* vegetarians...." then I patiently explain that vegetarians only eat what's grown but some people make certain exceptions in their diet so they put the terms (pollo, pesco, lacto, ovo) in front to show what exceptions they make which is fine for them, but it's not what I do so I don't use any terms. There are some that say "vegetarian" but make exceptions so technically they're not really vegetarian, they're just hyphenated but won't say so.

Most people understand that.

I'm pretty sure shrimp have a nervous system. I just asked Mr. Biology and he confirms it.

Quote:

This works too.

I actually haven't had to explain my eating habits to very many people. Most of the time I can just say "No thanks" to offers of hot dogs, and that's the end of it. Usually the ordering-pizza or what-restaurant-do-we-go-to issues are resolved peacefully. I can probably count the times I've been hassled on one hand. Which seems to put me in the minority. Lucky me!

Yes you should consider yourself very lucky! I get hassled about my no meat lifestyle usually once or twice a week just at the office!

Yea, I thought that I was pretty off about the "shrimp don't have nervous system" thing but I wasn't sure. I think I should have stayed awake more in biology class...
