Hello all, I'm seriously looking into a vegan lifestyle for health reasons, but many of the recipes I come across (and I mean lots of them) have beans of some type as a main ingredient.

I am allergic to beans. I eat a bite of beans and my throat swells shut till I can't breathe and get to take a trip to the ER. And this goes for every type of bean I've taken the risk to try. Pinto, navy, kidney, black, white, soy and lentils. All the same reaction to varying degrees. Caught early enough with a double dose of Benadryl I don't have to go to the ER. But Ive prettywell give up on beans. Surprisingly, tofu does not give me the same reaction as soybeans in bean form.

So my question is, am I doomed to fail at the great vegan experiment?

You can be a bean-free vegan. What a terrible allergy. Sorry that you have to deal with this. Are you allergic to anything else?

Hmm, could it be that you're allergic to the skins of the beans, since you don't have any reactions to tofu?

Ideas for protein:
tofu, soy milk, soy products
quinoa, and other seeds,
nuts, nut butters, nut milks
rice,
wheat, seitan
oats, millet, other grains, etc.

If I were you, I'd consult both an allergist and a dietician. I'd find out if it all beans or just some kinds of beans. Usually a true bean allergy includes nuts, so I'd check on that too. And I'd see if the allergist could recommend anything. And I'd check with a dietician to see how best to eat a vegan diet without beans. If you can tolerate tofu then you're probably good to go.

You can find chickpea tofu.
How about tempeh?
Ask exactly what it is about beans that causes reaction.
Did you have reactions from things that contain soy protein?

Are you allergic to peanuts, or tree nuts? What about peas?

that is a bummer! I don't think you have to fail either, just may make planning a little harder, or eating out harder. I agree with the additional allergy testing. That is a good idea. It's weird that you can do tofu, but not soy beans. How about soy nuts? I was hoping lentils were going to be ok for you, but they were also listed in your list.

good luck, but use some of the recommendations given!

Have your tried to detox? All allergies can be eliminated by doing a detox every so often. Taking good probiotics will help too.

Sadly, that is simply incorrect.

Dewski, why do you say allergies can be eliminated by detoxing.....try telling someone who has a nut allergy....or say fish/seafood for example, that it's ok to try it now, because they've done a detox? Not a good idea, unles you have medication to treat anaphylactic shock and they're in the ER!

Sorry to disappoint you, but it is correct. Where do you think toxins sit and manifest into disease & also allergies? The liver. You cleanse the toxins out and all disease/allergies get flushed out as well.

Oh?

And is there any proof that those so-called "detoxes" actually work?

It's correct because you say it is?

Disappoint? Snark won't lend validity to your weak and unsupported arguments. You are saying a lot of false and potentially dangerous things, it seems, all in the interest of supporting the product line you're hawking. It's crass.

I say that because it's true. Toxins sit in your liver & colon. These toxins can cause allergies & disease. There are several ways to test for food allergies.

Yes, apparently science and medicine means nothing, right?

No, it's correct because that's how it all starts...in the liver & colon.

Here's a quote from Hippocrates: "let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."

It's just that you are making these statements without backing them up.

If you're going to suggest that allergies are curable, then you need some evidence (and maybe more than just Dr. Mercola). Telling people that they can cure allergies by using a detox diet is a pretty good way to ensure that some of them end up dead.

Some allergies are treatable via immunotherapy (aka allergy shots). I have been getting allergy shots for my fire ant allergy for a while now, and they have helped. I'm not sure if anything similar is out there for food allergies.
