All Britons could be vegetarian by 2047 as 2,000 people a week stop eating meat, a study claimed yesterday.

Already 40 per cent of Brits avoid eating meat at least once a week with six per cent of the population totally vegetarian.

Jan Walsh, of the Consumer Analysis Group which did the research with Safeway, said: "To think that we could all be vegetarians by 2047 will come as a shock for some people, but it seems like we will be entering an age where the nation as a whole has finally begun to understand and respect the environment."

She added: "You can almost imagine that in the future it will be the norm to be vegetarian and people will have to consciously opt to eat meat, rather than the other way around."

Britain has the second largest number of vegetarians in Europe after Germany.

The study, released yesterday for National Vegetarian Week, estimated that a lifelong vegetarian saves 760 chickens, five cows, 20 pigs, 20 sheep and half a tonne of fish. And the average non-meat eater visits hospital 22 per cent less often, saving the NHS £220 a year per person - a potential cost cut of £736million.

Safeway spokeswoman Louise Barnett said: "Supermarkets have had a positive impact on the numbers of people becoming vegetarian in the last 50 years - especially by increasing the variety of products available.

"Our task must be to provide a total vegetarian solution: not just more fruit and vegetables, but more innovative products that offer customers choice and a sound nutritional balance.

"We predict that supermarkets will become much more like hubs of world foods, with flavours, smells and textures to tempt every taste bud."

In 2047 I'd be 93 for real then.

GBS had a lovely quote I can't quite remember it, but that he wanted 5 cows, 20 sheep and 20 pigs to attend his funeral as he hadn't eaten them while he was alive.

Now that will be cool! An entirely vegetarian Britain. I don't have my hopes up though. There are still some people who have nothing better to do than ponce around on horseback hunting foxes for their fun. These philistines have never herd of tetris.

But I can't wait another 44 years!

I love how studies like this are used for propaganda. As if the rate of change will remain constant forever...

I'd love the world to be 100% vegetarian by the time I'm old and gray, but I don't see it happening.

I'll be happy if the world goes veggie about as far as the world has currently gone non-smoking. That would be a vast improvement. And, hey, maybe almost no one will smoke in 44 years!

Maybe we should all get frozen, and be unfrozen once the world is veggie? hehe. j/k. What a beautiful wish though. I think people would be much more harmonious. I would LOVE to see that...

I'll be 61 in 2047.. It's not really relevant because I live in America. It would be cool if America started taking a cue, which a lot are, but it's not enough with the stupid Atkins craze... I REALLY hope that fizzles out, it's a TERRIBLE lifestyle... especially since it isn't healthful to a lot of people (i.e. heart diseases). All I can say is, Go Dr. Ornish!

OH MY GOD I'M MOVING TO BRITAIN! hehe that would be wonderful if Americans were as open-minded. I don't honestly see it happening as soon as 2047 .. although I'd love to be feeding my grandkids veggie dogs on whole wheat buns with big glasses of soy milk!

Damn you Dr. Atkins!!!!

I wonder what percent stick with it and what percent give up.

Interesting article though. It's good that the movement is gaining strength in Britain.

The article is being very optomistic, but hey, it's something cool, although last time i heard, the amount of vegetarians was decreasing, mainly dude to the popularity of atkins, and also because the food scares of 1996 and 2001 have worn off a bit.

Cool. Britian ROCKS!

Though I can imagine at a certain time the rate of vegetarians would slow down because theres always gonna be those people who hunt and primitive things like that.

I'd like to say "when pigs fly", but in that case, hunting flying pigs will probably be the new sport in France...

(sorry..)
