Jobs vs. possible animal testing divide Chandler (Arizona)

The $200 million plant proposed by Covance Inc. of Princeton, N.J., initially could bring up to 400 high-paying jobs, and it significantly could bolster Arizona's stature as an emerging biomedical hub.

The project has pitted economic-development officials against animal rights activists, with both sides marshaling forces for a zoning hearing late this summer or early in the fall.

Covance is one of the world's largest drug-development services companies, and it has close ties to virtually every major drugmaker as well as to prominent medical research organizations.
