Hi Fellow Veggies

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Well I have now finally decided to give alcohol up. If you can drink in moderation or dont have some alert trigger from the past I think alcohol have its purpose as the occasional red wine can have lots of health benefits or glass of whiskey.

As for me. I have to give it up.

Now just to get the chocolate cravings under control ...

supposedly addicts crave chocolate. i find this to be true.

That may be true, but I've never heard of any girl that got raped at a party after eating too many chocolates, or anybody who ended up in a head on collision because they drank too much hot chocolate, or a husband that beat his wife and kids because he enjoys chocolate soymilk, so I'd say that while addiction may be plausible, the level of things that could go horribly wrong are not even in the same ballpark. I use this same logic when someone points out the fact I occasionally drink soda.

No, no..I was pre-emptively striking at people who may choose to try to "get me" on eating chocolate while being anti alcohol/drugs. You know how some people try to "get" vegetarians by saying "Oh but you step on bugs" or "oh plants are alive too" or stupid non comparisons? This is just a pre emptive strike against a false comparison between types of addicitons.

The human body itself produces addictive hormones when doing certain activities, like jogging or having sex. These activities are actually very good for the body and brain, and up to a certain limit the more you do the better it is for you. They're both very addictive, but not in a bad way. If you jog six miles, the effect on your brain is very different from if you drank six beers. I don't think anyone could argue with that, and yet some people make false comparisons and try to "call people out" on "inconsistencies." Just like with the vegetarian thing.

I wasn't accusing anyone in this thread of having done that YET. I'm just throwing it out there early, because it relates strongly to this topic. I have a fascination with logical fallacies and poor debating points because I encounter so many online. I find some of the arguments against teetotalism remarkably similar to many of the arguments against vegetarianism.

I've recently decided to give up alcohol, as well, for many reasons. Looking forward to reaping the benefits of an even healthier lifestyle. And it's awesome that some fellow veggies are doing the same thing! Thanks for your post, Kasandra @Josh James xVx, thanks for pointing out the logical validity of the chocolate addiction. That's something I'll never give up.

Good luck!

I hardly ever drink and when I do I don't really have more than a glass of whiskey. Actually, I pretty much only drink whiskey when I do drink. Example of how little I drink.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

That red line is how much I have left in my bottle of Jameson's... I've had that bottle since November...

And I have an expensive bottle of single malt whisky which I've drunk even less of...

I don't find it hard at all not to drink. Even though I'm a student and the majority of students I know believe that alcohol is mandatory if you're a student. I don't go to clubs but I do go to pubs and I have never had anything said or anything about just ordering fizzy drinks or fruit juice. Even when I ended up in a cocktail bar with some friends, they had non-alcoholic cocktails (basically fruit juice ) so it was fine.
I don't know if you think like this but I have seen and heard people say that they feel they have to drink to have a good time and that if they don't want to drink then they think that the people they're with are talking about them behind their back saying that they're a bore etc. Never had that. I think people do read too much into social drinking and feeling like they have to join in. I actually find it fun being the only sober person. It is so much fun telling people the next day what they got up to.. My friends have also sort of come to rely on me to look after them when they're drunk. They know I won't let them do anything stupid and I think they like knowing that they will have a sober friend around or, if I'm not with them, on the end of a phone. And if it's one of the rare occasions when I do drink, they know I won't get drunk because I've never been drunk in my life and have no plans on ever being so.

Actually, the only reason I drink is that I like the taste of whiskey. Straight whiskey. I don't do mixers... I don't like wine, beer, alcopops, vodka etc etc. Really, the only thing I like is whiskey and even then only certain ones...

Aren't you straight-edge? Chocolate has caffeine, and caffeine is a drug.

Kasandra, best of luck! I'm actually almost 26 now and have never even tasted any alcohol. I have a history of addiction in my imediate family, and saw what it did to them, so i decided i'd never touch the stuff, nor drugs. It's not hard. It's just your choice not to drink. I find that that way, knowing it's your choice, it's so much easier to say no. (not that anybody tries to bully you into drinking or drugs, i've never found that to be true).

I also try to be straight edge as close as possible, but caffine is my down fall. I'll give it up months at a time, only to be re-addicted later. Sigh. That makes me feel like giving it up.... agian. =D

Hi Animeidee

Trust me I know all about an addictive personality, it also manifest from the one thing to the other eating disorder, alcohol, drugs, you name it.

I am absolutely sick of it besides it never helps only makes things worse.

I dont need those grudges in my life anymore.

I found giving up meat so easy as I love animals and dont want to hurt them but why can't I have the same respect for myself?

I have a history with addiction so should know better... You can never be in control or just have one... it always spirals..

I am so grateful for all the support here.

I got some terrible news today but for ones in my life I will be strong within myself and not look for quick fixes.

True true! I also have an Addictive personality, i know this to be a fact. The only way i know to stop it, is going cold turkey w/ other areas in my life, so i'm lucky that i recognized it early enough on to never start w/ drinking or smoking or drugs.

Best of luck~~! Just be confident in who you are, and the desisions you've made, and know it's for you, not anyone else. If someone asks you to eat a burger, you'd say no, so just transfer that into drinking. =) You can do it!
