Twenty-five years ago, a British woman who saw a spot on a tonsil tried to get a better look using a pen and a mirror. She slipped and the pen went down her throat.

Neither the woman's husband nor her doctor believed her. X-rays at the time didn't detect the pen. Now, "they are eating their words," as NPR's Linda Wertheimer put it.

A CT scan shows she was right. And the woman, 76, had the felt-tip pen removed. Even after all these years without trouble, doctors figured there was a risk the pen could tear a hole in her stomach. Remarkably, the pen still worked.

When I originally saw that article on Yahoo, I thought a doctor left it inside her. Interesting that she swallowed it herself!

Why would they not believe her?? How do you imagine swallowing a pen? Surely they get people in thinking they've swallowed all kinds of crap they haven't, but a pen is pretty big.

I had a patient swallow 3 pens in less than two weeks. I know I couldn't do it, but that person had no problem.

I would not want to use that pen.

I've heard stranger things. Like that some women have had actual, living, whole human beings in their bellies and then after nine months those creatures have exited and been all gooey, bloody and noisy.

I'm thinking sexism. A case of the "crazy woman." But, then again, she seems a bit off it. In some of these reports it says she was standing on top of a staircase, poking her tonsils with a pen and a mirror in her hand when she fell down the stairs. That's REALLY stupid.

Some have human beings live in them for 46 years! They don't come out noisy though....
