It has been brought to my attention that a lot of the personal ad services allow you to select an option for seeking friends/activity partners.

On the surface, this seems like a good idea. I'd like to meet people in my area with common interests to go to the movies with, attend concerts with, and maybe go out to dinner once in awhile. I have some close friends locally, but they work a different schedule than I do, and it can be hard to get together sometimes.

I'm a little bit afraid of personal ads, though...and I really, really, really am not looking for someone to date. I just got out of a serious relationship and I'm just not ready to get into the game again...and when I am ready, I hope to date a particular person that is very special.

What do you guys think of this? Is it worth a try?

If you do, create a completely separate webmail account for that purpose. Although most services are supposed to strip the your address from your mail, a- that isn't infallible b- not all do that (not sure veggie date does)

I don't see anything that scary about personals, especially if you are only looking for activity partners. I would worry that you may get responses from people who really would like a romantic relationship but are just trying to get a foot in the door so to speak.

I did it for about 1.5 months, and there are weirdos but it's like real life, you just keep your antennae up and wait for the normals.

Although this link is about romantic personal use, some of it may pertain to you. At the least, this site and it's sister sites are very entertaining. http://www.moonlitwalks.com/personals/index.php

Thanks for the link, Thalia. It looks like an interesting site, so I'll definitely read through it. ^_^

Yeah, one of my concerns was that I would be approached by someone who really wanted a romantic relationship, and was just trying to "get a foot in the door".

I suppose that if I do this, I'll have to find a way to politely make it very clear in the ad that I am not looking for anything other than a platonic buddy to hang out with sometimes.

my roommate did that. she had 0 friends for almost 3 yrs and finally decided to go online to meet people. i wish i had the site. its called mixer mixer or something. it has worked really well for her. she just wanted to meet some platonic girlfriends and she has met several people and eventually you kind of clique w/ certain people. i even went out w/ her and her new friends a couple of times and they are really nice, genuine people who either just moved here or wanted to meet new people. i will email her and see if she will gimme the site...

A friend of mine did that and that's how she met several of her closest friends. She wrote her own ad and said she was just looking for other like-minded individuals to hang out with.

Another possibility is posting an ad saying that you'd like to start a group of some kind. One of my best friends posted an ad that she was looking to start a writing group--I responded and when we met, we just hit it off and now we see each other outside of the writing group on a very regular basis. If you have a specific hobby or something--maybe you could say you were interested in meeting fellow veggies with whom to try different restaurants.

I have been thinking about doing this too Ceryna .. I have no one besides my boyfriend and the 2 other girls at my office who are "real live" friends. I haven't done it already because all of my serious relationships were with people I have been best friends with first, and I didn't want to risk liking the person who really is in love with me. I'm going to go check out that www.mixermixer.com that Avocados suggested though.. maybe I'll see you there!

Good Luck!
