Action Alert: Ask for FELONY charges against Timothy Putt for slamming adog into the pavement, killing it!

Action Alert: Demand felony charges for a man who slammed a dog into the pavement, killing it!

Location: Charlotte, NC (US)

This action alert expires on Jul 25, 2006!

Upcoming Court Dates: July 26, 2006

On June 19, Lincoln County resident Timothy Scott Putt will go to trial on charges that he killed a small dog by bashing in the animal's skull. According to reports, Putt picked up a Jack Russell Terrier by the hind legs, and bashed the dog's head against the pavement twice, killing the dog.

North Carolina's animal cruelty law clearly states that to "maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat . . . or kill . . . any animal" is to commit a Class I felony, but to date Putt is facing mere misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. If he is convicted of the misdemeanor, he faces penalties equivalent to those for jaywalking or other petty crimes.

Putt's trial is scheduled for July 26, 2006.

As you may know, the connection between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence has been established for many years. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Allen Brantley was quoted as saying "Animal cruelty... is not a harmless venting of emotion in a healthy individual; this is a warning sign." Putt's actions in this case meet several of the factors that are considered high-risk for future violence against humans, as outlined by Dr. Randall Lockwood.

Please immediately contact the prosecutor and the district attorney in this case and respectfully request that they upgrade the criminal charge against Timothy Putt to a felony offense, reflecting the malicious and cruel nature of his alleged crime. Ask that they seek, upon conviction, significant jail time, mandatory psychological counseling and a prohibition on caring for or owning animals.

Please note: Ms. Killian and Mr. Young represent Cleveland County and Lincoln County and need to hear from as many concerned citizens as possible. Please ask your family, friends and colleagues to contact them as well. When you contact them, please let them know if you reside in Cleveland County or Lincoln County.
