Hi everyone,

This is my first post on veggieboards and it sucks it has to be on a negative note. Ever since I became vegan four to five months ago, I have began to have seriously bad breakouts around the mouth area? I am an 18 year old teenage girl and follow a high carb low fat diet, with minimal consumption of soy products.

Previous to going vegan, I had oily skin but never any serious breakouts like what I am currently experiencing.

I have seen online that breakouts around the mouth area are often related to hormonal imbalances and I was just wondering whether anyone had experienced something similar and it eventually cleared up or whether it is an issue I may need to visit the doctor about.

You might consider making an appointment with an allergist - your doctor can refer you to one. It's possible that, as a vegan, you've increased your consumption of a food(s) to which you are allergic.

I felt your pain!!!!

Hi I'm your age! And this happened to me my first WHOLE year as a high carb (mainly just fruit/veg/cooked veg) vegan, it wasn't fun.. It was kind of miserable. But it is your body detoxing from the previous 18 years of junk, animal product, and animal suffering from your diet. After about a year though, it really settled down, now my skin just has the occasional break out here or there. I know how bad it can be, but stick it out & ride the wave. I'm telling you, it's worth it. Again, it took my body about a solid 12-14 months to fully detox and rid of my acne, but I did it but just letting it do its thing, no doctors, and now my skin is amazing.

At the start of new diet you may get breakouts, slowly adjusting to the new vegan diet it will start to clear up but may take a few weeks. I've been dealing with acne since I was a teenager and I do reckon that vegan diet helps preventing it. I have moderate scarring from my acne when I was a teen and unfortunately I cant seeing improving or fading away with whole-foods vegan diet :(

Any drastic change is enough cause for a breakout to occur. However... four or five months? It's likely more to do with what you're eating as opposed to any change that is still occurring. Personally I don't believe in the concept of "detoxing," there's a very real reason as to why you're breaking out into acne and using shadowy terms like "detox" in the same way a parent might say that "magic" is the reason a flower blooms overnight is not helpful.

But that's like, just my opinion, man.



After doing a brief internet search, high carb is typically tied in with acne, BUT, usually when high carb is consumed in combination with high fat. "Empty" carb calories (read: refined white sugar, flour, etc., basically the refined foods) have also been tied in.

Try experimenting with your diet. Go a week eating mostly starchy carbs for calories and see if the acne clears up. Then go a week eating a majority of your calories from fruits. Then go another week trying to eat as many leafy green things as possible. Once you find a certain food group that doesn't make you break out in acne, start slowly adding in other types of carbs to try and determine the culprit that's causing you to break out.
