I was driving home from work which was an awful day and I get really close to home then all the sudden I see a Opossum in the middle of the street walking what looks to be very slowly and I was going 40 mph. I hit it and a car was right behind me so I assume they did too.. I feel so guilty and so bad. I have never hit a animal before. I just feel horrible!!!

I'm sorry. I've had a few close calls with critters on the road. I'm so grateful I've never struck one. I saw the person in front of me hit a raccoon once. It was horrible. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

it happens. i've done it too. my worst was a cat, by the time i got to it and pulled it out of the road it died in my arms.
was it still alive? if it's a female it possibly has babies in her pouch that may be alive even if the mom dies

Hitting animals if the worst feeling ever. I killed a couple of ducklings on a horrible rainy day because I didn't see them until it was too late. Accidents happen though.

I am so sorry and understand how badly you feel. One time I hit a squirrel on my way to volunteer at and animal shelter, of all things. The positive that came out of it was that I vowed to try to reduce my car mile and use my bike for errands as much as I possibly could. Being part of the human impact that we all try to minimize is heart-wrenching.

I assume opossums are just as dumb as the possums here, it's really inevitable if you're driving a car. I usually a see a couple a week. Still, I don't think you can dismiss responsibility for it, driving a car is ultimately a fairly destructive thing to do.

Don't sweat it as long as it wasn't intentional. I accidentally hit a cat once with my car but when it turned out to still be living it turned into a real horror story. I tried to back my car over it again several times to kill it. Long story short... I kept missing. I was in highschool and my first girlfriend was in the car with me. Every time I tried to back the car over the poor thing I kept missing. My heart was in the right place but in the end it turned into quite the traumatic experience. The poor thing was just glued to the road. In the end I had to grab a huge rock and bash it over the head. It happens. Move on. I only hope that when I die someone has a big rock handy.

I am right there with you. I hit a rabbit one night coming home from the store and it tore me up. I mean tore me up. I was sobbing when I got home, I am not afraid to admit, and I was unable to pull myself together for about a half an hour after I got home, if not longer. It was such a horrible experience.

Because they lack any roadsense whatsoever - cats for instance at least have a basic grasp.

I don't know how intelligent they actually are, but I don't think they're mental giants.

considering that a cat's defense is to either attack or run while an opossum's instinct is to play dead it makes a lot of sense that they won't run away from a car the same way a cat would. if you had ever interacted with an opossum you'd know they're not dumb

well, i've never interacted with opossums as we don't have them here. I've rescued a couple of possums though, and they don't seem especially bright. Still, it's not like I've spent a lot of time with them.

So sorry. It's tough. I know. Yes, number one thing if possible with opossums hit by cars: check the pouch. I once turned down a side street and saw one who must have been recently struck by a car. I called a friend who knew a rehab person. First thing we did was check and sure enough there was one surviving baby. Poor mama had to be put to sleep because of a badly broken pelvis and other injuries, but the little one was placed with a surrogate mama and got along just fine.
