In response to the VegNews stock photo debacle, vegans have created their own stock photo site. They are looking for contributions

http://beta.veganstockphoto.com/

Here is some information about the couple who created the site:

http://www.ourhenhouse.org/2011/04/c...ck-photo-site/

Once the site is officially launched the adress will be www.veganstockphoto.com

The editor of ecorazzi defended VegNews writing that non-journalists did not know what they were talking about by suggesting community sourced pictures as an option. He wrote that magazines have very specific picture specifications and that making that work with freebies is more trouble than it is worth.

Is that a real issue?

If so, will this new site be taking that consideration into account?

Yes it's a real issue.

1) Licensing issues. The beta veganstockphoto website does not allow commercial use. VegNews cannot use any of those photos until this changes.

2) Photo quality issues. Look at the size of the photos at istockphoto that VegNews was using. For example, one of the photos cited by Quarry Girl went up to 4288px x 2848px. A similar burger and fries photo on veganstockphoto is only 1600px x 1200px. VegNews cannot use these photos until the quality improves.

These issues can and will be fixed. It's just going to take time.

I think this is part of why VegNews is setting up their own stock photo website. If they set it up, they can ensure it meets their needs.

Edit to add other issues:
- Proper photo tagging. Many nonprofessionals use inadequate tagging and thus make their photos difficult to find.
- Permission. Many nonprofessionals do not get permission from the people in their photographs. If the photo is to be used for commercial purposes, permission from "models" is needed. I suspect it's the same for restaurant food.
- Layout. Nonprofessionals also rarely take much notice of layout and their photographs have too much in the background. That makes it difficult to crop for use in a magazine.

Sounds like more crap to me. I've had five photos published in those 365 ____ a Year calendars, and those are all submitted by amateurs. The calendar simply gives you the specifications for what they need, and you follow their guidelines. They manage year after year after year to obtain way more photos than they need, and 365 photos is a large number! There was never any reason why VegNews couldn't have staged the exact same competition.

I think both you and Elaine have good points with your posts. There are a few more concerns than just asking for pictures, but like you wrote, those arrangements can be worked out if someone is willing to make them into an ongoing concern.

The point is that people took proactive action, rather than sitting on their asses, pissing and moaning about how horrible VegNews is.

I don' think I moan when I piss, unless I was delayed into getting into the bathroom for a long time.

Not even when you've been holding it and it is a relief to finally be able to let go?

That is the situation I described, but being a guy I can go a LONG time before I reach that point. There always bushes to prevent that situation as well. So, I end up either moaning or pissing, but rarely pissing and moaning.
