Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding our research andfeeding studies. We are passionate about cats and dogs with a deep commitment to their health and welfare, so we understand how important this issue is to you.

For several years misleading and inaccurate information has been circulatingand I appreciate this opportunity to provide you with the facts. To ensure that our products are safe and wholesome, we have theresponsibility to pet owners to feed our products to dogs and cats. Over 70% of the dogs and cats in our feeding studies live in consumers' homes; however, some of our feeding studies require a controlled environment andare conducted at our own Pet Health and Nutrition Center or at anorganization where pets are already residing-like animal shelters, or groups that train and provide assistance dogs.

The controlled studies are the veterinary equivalent of nutritional or medical studies acceptable on people. These studies are monitored by our own staff of veterinarians, behaviorists and independent experts. Our dogs and cats get the most advanced pet nutrition and health care as we developformulas to help all cats and dogs live longer and healthier lives. At our Pet Health and Nutrition Center, dogs are housed with a companion (because dogs are pack animals). Each kennel has a doggie-door that takesthem to an outside run, so they have plenty of room to run and play. Eachdog is provided with his or her own toys (rotated on a regular basis) and their very own comfortable bed to sleep on. There is also a dog park adjacent to the kennels where the dogs play and interact each day in playgroups.

Our cats are housed in compatible play groups. Each room is furnished withbeds, toys (to stimulate play) and several perches, which allow the cats toobserve things from a higher viewpoint. They also have a very large window, which has a platform for the cats to lie in the sun or just sit and watchthe birds feeding at the outside bird feeders. Frankly, I don't know what to believe anymore. I watched the videos on PETA and then they send me this letter... anybody care to weigh in on this issue?

No idea. But I read somewhere that the labs that were/are doing the testing aren't part of Iams company, or something like that. Like Iams wasn't aware of it, or denies being aware of it; but it still goes on.

The company supports the torture and killing of lamb/horse/cow/ and whatever else. Supporting the toture of dogs and cats is no suprise. I see no difference between a dog and a pig. Is it horrible? sure. But the entire company supports the meat industry.

Horrible but not surprising.

Well, here's what I know..

IAMS is medium to low quality dog food that nobody should feed their pets. When Proctor and Gamble bought the company and started selling it in supermarkets, the quality of the food shot down drastically. Look at the ingredients.

As for the content of the letter, IAMS did clean up their act after the PETA investigation and they fired the lab that was responsible for so many of the grievances. But they're no where near as responsible of a company as many other of the leaders in the Pet Food industry.

If they were a decent quality dog food, I might look into it more and consider buying it, but as it stands now there's just no reason to buy IAMS when it's one of the lower quality brands available.

Those are good and so is Natural Balance, which I buy for my dogs. I buy Nutro for my cats. They love it but didn't like the Natural Balance cat food too much.

My dog ended up with bad tear stains after I fed her Nutro for a couple of weeks. I'm not sure why that happened.
