I had a couple of really good experiences yesterday. First, I saw my dad looking at the Ringling Bros. website, perhaps thinking of taking my niece to the circus. I didn't have a chance to say anything about it, but when I came back into the room I saw him watching the PETA video about Ringling's cruel animal practices. I've made comments about the circus in the past, but it's nice to see him seeking out information on his own.

Later that night I was driving with my 7 year old niece and we had the following conversation:

S: "What is your favorite animal?"

Me: "I like penguins and otters and pigs and...I guess I like all animals a lot, that's why I don't eat them."

S: "I want to be a vegetarian, but I can't."

Me: "Why not?"

S: "Because I eat eggs."

Me: "Some vegetarians eat eggs, and some drink milk. The ones that don't eat eggs or milk are called vegans, or strict vegetarians. Being a vegetarian just means that you don't eat animals."

S: "Oh. long pause I used to like bacon a lot, but now I don't eat it."

Me: "That's good, bacon isn't very good for you anyway."

S: "Yeah, I'm cutting back on the bacon."

This isn't the first time she's talked to me about being a vegetarian. She also started drinking soymilk at my parents' house, because they always keep some there for me. Now she likes it better than cow milk so her mom buys it for her at home.

It's nice to feel like I'm having some influence on my family.
