Many years ago, I took a job in an animal testing facility in Philadelphia. They mainly tested cosmetics and household products for big companies before marketing.

On my interview, the director told me, Once you've been here a few days, you lose respect for all living things.

I was instantly horrified.

I accepted the job so I could see for myself what I had been reading about for years; that animals were tortured and killed for non-essential luxury items such as cosmetics and personal care items. I worked there for almost one year. What I had been reading about was true. Animals were treated inhumanely and suffered so that mascara or deordorant could be marketed. They suffered a great deal in the name of science and safety. However, the reality of it is that testing these products on animals does nothing to ensure consumer safety.

And it isn't required by any law.

That was a good article, thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder of why I buy cruelty free products.

For the record I have mixed feelings about killing bunnies. First off many people who have tired of them have dropped them off in the city parks where I live, and they breed like, well you know, bunnies. Our farms have been overrun with them, destroying crops and doing other damage to our ecosystem. There has been calls for a bunny cull, but due to the outcry this was over turned. I've seen hundreds in a park at any one time. There is a group that is spaying them and sending them to a bunny sanctuary somewhere stateside. Our city has banned the sale of them in pet stores. So my point is, at what point is the damage that they are doing to crops, parks etc (and I'm talking about a large population, not a few bunnies) gets to the point where something has to be done to reduce the population? I'm personally against killing them, but would like to see them relocated to a place where they can no longer do damage to our crops and parks. It's a very real problem that our city hall has to deal with on a yearly basis. They have no natural predators here, other than the coyotes, but even they can do only so much to reduce the huge population of bunnies we have here.

I couldn't agree more! The sanctuary that you have mentioned is where our bunnies are being sent to once they have been spayed or neutered. A local group is doing this with help with donations from the public. The sad thing is that there are way too many irresponsible pet owners these days, in that once the newness wears off owning the bunny and the reality of caring for it long term kicks in. That it's easier to dump the pet in the nearest park rather than honor the commitment that they made to the animal when they bought it.

A sanctuary I volunteer at has at least a hundred bunnies that have been caught at a college campus and then spayed/neutered and sent to the sanctuary. Taking care of that many is intense work and I'm pretty sure they only get a fraction of the rabbits that are caught and sent to rescues and sanctuaries.

Elaine, I love that picture you posted. I've never thought about it in that way with rabbits but it is so true.

Good article. Posted to my fb page. Elaine, heartbreaking and beautifully written. I'm looking for this on their site to post on fb as well.
