COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (KETV/CNN) A woman received an $835 parking ticket while attending her son's all-day baseball tournament.

"My ticket is for $750, plus an $85 court fee, which makes it $825," said Laura Sherman.

Sherman admitted passing over open spaces, driving over the curb, and parking on the grass Sunday at the Council Bluffs Recreation Complex.

[cut]

There are about a dozen "No parking on the grass" signs located on 34th Avenue, the main road leading into the complex. There's another "No parking on the grass" sign in the parking lot where Sherman parked.

http://www.kplctv.com/story/14639208...parking-ticket

I recommend watching the video for more details.

What do you think? Justified ticket? Justified ticket amount?

I guess she won't park on the grass again.

That's disgustingly high.

Not sure if it's justified or not though.

She didn't explain why she passed on those open spaces. I might be on her side if there hadn't been anywhere else to park. The fine seems excessive, but I don't feel that bad for her.

The fine seems extremely excessive to me as she didn't do anything dangerous, just annoying and I think you can get most people's attention with a $100 fine. Cities are trying to make up what they aren't getting in taxes in some crazy ways.

I'm on the fence because the cars are killing the grass, so I'm sure it's costing the city a lot of money to keep the grass nice. There were empty spaces and she chose to drive over a red curb parked NO PARKING onto grass. There's no way she didn't know that the parking was off limits. The parking ticket was definitely justified, just not sure if the cost is. Maybe.

Considering the comment about the "$15 dollar ticket not working"... it seems more than extreme to charge $750. They had at least 735 (give or take one) dollar amounts to try before reaching that amount. For that matter they could charge $15 the first time, $30 the next, $60 the next and so on (the first being a "fine, just in case you didn't know--the others being a "hey, you knew"). Or for that matter, just put a big sign at all entrances saying "only park in the parking lot--$120 fine for anyone parking somewhere else" with the sign repeated again later on, just to make sure.

How did they make the jump from $15 to $750!!

In the video someone mentioned that people parked on the grass for shade because there are trees, but I don't think I would not park on the pavement just for shade. That seems strange.

I think she got the ticket she deserved. If she thinks it is okay to park where ever she feels I can't even imagine what other things she thinks she is entitled to do. Even if there were no signs would any of you think you could park on the grass?

Uh, yeah--in my town (and many of the public places), parking in the grass is not only allowed, it's expected! At one time they only had parking (at a park, with 8 baseball diamonds...) 30 parking spaces! Then they expanded the parking lot (because of numerous complaints) upping the amount to about 100 spaces--still no where near enough when games are going. Other places (parks) have similar arrangements (mainly camping and nature-sites). Basically, it's not a universal parking thing--and without knowing what it is in her location, there may be some places that allow it, and others that don't.

If the signs were adequate then I have no Sympathy, I remember being in the USA 20 years ago a seeing road signs that said something like " $1000 fine for littering". I only wish they would do that here.

I'm not so sure about that... I think people have gotten less for drunk driving. I got a parking ticket last year for parking in the street when "the snowplows couldn't pass" which would be more than justified, if there was as much as a snowflake on the ground. It was still 5 degrees over night, but because I had parked on the street when the bylaw was in effect(unbeknown to me ) I got the ticket($80! A days pay!).

As Delicioso stated, I think it's a way for the city to scrape up a few extra dollars. Hiring 1000 meter maids to catch everyone who's meter expires, not ensuring the publics knowledge of local bylaws, red light cameras, automated speed traps... The town I used to live in... if you didn't know, you could go for a Sunday drive and rack up several hundred dollars in fines. It just gets to the point where they look for any mistakes with a fine toothed comb, and soak us for it. 8km/h over is enough for a speeding ticket. Everyone who has a license has gone atleast 8 over at some point, ran a yellow/red at some point... parked illegally(as innocent as it may be), let a meter run out...

We have $5000 here but nobody obeys them... Nor do they obey the drinking and driving laws. Should see the beer cans in street after the weekend.

Yep. I used to have to drive through a city just like the one you mentioned. It seemed like almost every single time I got pulled over for something ridiculous.

Quote:

I threw out a piece of gum once and it ended up sticking to my passenger side door. It's also saddens me and enrages me that nobody obeys the drinking and driving laws. Those laws need to be stricter.

The lady thought she was too special to park in the parking lot and she got a big ticket for it. It's funny.

I've watched "Parking Wars" too many times to be sympathetic, lol. That being said, it is a tad bit excessive for something like that ya know.
