I go to a public school that has over 1400 kids invovled. I've been hearing stuff lately about kids who drive ridiculously fast at night on these country back roads we have, aiming for animals they come across. I've seen it in action (The poor squirrel didn't stand a chance....) Is there absolutely anything I can do to stop this, or maybe a way to keep them from doing this crap. I don't want to see any more deer or foxes on the side of the road...

Also, a few months ago, a video was put into circulation of a woman who was killing a small black puppy with a black stilletto shoe on her foot. Did anyone see that? I'd love to know where it came from to get my political buddies on a legislation plan for harsher animal abuse laws.

I cried when I saw that. Watching that video put me on my short list of times I've become so depressed that I wasn't able to do anything for hours. Watching that puppy cry and squeel was beyond upsetting. I couldn't put it into words what I would do to that deranged woman wearing the stilletto if I had witnessed her kill that puppy.

Before I get to upset again...We too have the same problem of stupid teenagers intentionally trying to hit animals wandering into the road. It's a sick game that the kids with trucks especially love to play. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything you can do about it other than wish that the person swerving towards the poor animaly skids, flips over a bunch of times and hope their car crossess paths with the largest tree in the woods or better yet the edge of a cliff...but that's a horrible thought to think . Or you could put up a sign or something.

If they want to do that, it's their problem. I don't personally swerve for anything or anyone unless it'll do me more damage to hit it than smash into the objects at the side of the road or oncoming traffic, and that's unlikely.

Quote:

I reckon I could do it. I'm not sure if that would be censored or not here.

We could have a competition! See how ugly it could get, within the boundaries of reality.

I'm not sure if you could do much, but you could try notifying the police about the stories you hear. If you can get a cop to watch the area during the night shift, they may catch the kids speeding. If they get tickets, maybe they'll think twice about doing it again.

Poor animals.

I've never hit an animal with my car, and I drive a lot.

I suppose in your state, it may even be against the law to deliberately kill wildlife in this fashion.

I would definitely notify the police and see if anything can be done. Maybe they can even send out a notice to kids at the school that police may be watching the area, as a preventative.

Reminds me of the story about the Concrete Puppy.

When I was in high school, I overheard conversations about purposefully hitting animals (or abusing animals in other ways) on a near-weekly basis. The only "remedy" that ever happened was I graduated high school and no longer heard the stories.

This seems like a near-universal problem, especially among teens in rural areas. I have a few ideas, but once again it is very difficult to prove and police.

*Does your school have a Driver's Ed department? If so, you may want to talk to the teacher privately one day and ask him/her to discuss cruelty behind the wheel in class or find out if you or a guest speaker from your Humane Society can put on a presentation. (This may not always work, as we all know many teachers are NOT animal-friendly but if you think the teacher would be open to it it's an idea.)

*Order "Give Wildlife a Brake" brochures from the HSUS. www.hsus.org Ask if you can put a stack of brochures/stickers in the student guidance dept., Driver's Ed room, or library.

*Call your local humane society and alert them of the problem. Ask if they could put an editorial or PSA in the local newspapers explaining the problem and urging parents of teenagers to discourage animal abuse in any form.

*Write a letter to the editor of your city or school newspaper.
