I just read in the local paper about a case where a motorist driving on the highway stopped a truck carrying 450 dogs on the way to the slaughterhouse in China. The motorist sent out a text to his friends and soon, 300 people showed up to block the truck. The police arrived and declared the truck driver had all the required paperwork to transport the dogs to the slaughterhouse (for meat). A standoff ensued between the police and animal activists for 17 hours when finally a philanthropic organization agreed to pay $15,000 for the dogs. The dogs were then transported to vet clinics for checkup. Many volunteers came to take care of the dogs and a company donated tons of dog food. Some citizens opposed the rescue and said the time and money would be better spent helping people. --> It irks me to no end when I hear comments like this!! If people want to help humans, go right ahead! But don't begrudge others who want to help animals!

But, you have no source? Name of the paper, edition, if it's online and such?

It's on Page A4 of The Toronto Star today (Apr 26, 2011). I haven't checked if this article is also online.
