Pauly Shore. Teenage sex. Nipplegate. It hasn't been easy living with MTV for the past 25 years. For better and sometimes not so much, the MTV moonman has made one giant footstep on popular culture. On the occasion of the cable network's big birthday today, 25 years after its first broadcast, it would be a shame not to take a look back at some of the best and worst things it has given us.

Count me as an oldie too. I didn't see the premier of MTV, but I do remember waiting for the premier of "Thriller." I also remember when MTV used to give away houses.

Before MTV ever hit the scene there used to be a local music video show here in the San Francisco bay area. It featured a wide variety of artists with a lot of local talent being shown.

I used to enjoy 120 Minutes a lot and found some great new (to me) groups that way. I also liked the first few seasons of Real World, but it got old. I also loved Celebrity Death Match and Daria.

MTV is definitely different these days, and I don't watch it much at all anymore.

I felt old when reading one story about the anniversary ...it mentioned that MTV was making little to-do because the network's average viewer (age 20) was even born when the premier took place.

MTV was groundbreaking, but to my non-cable friends and I, Friday Night Videos was well, awesome!

I was a Beavis & Butthead fan too, and I also used to watch plenty of Headbanger's Ball, 120 Minutes, and Liquid Television.

I remember Friday Night Videos too. It rocked, in the day.

I also remember watching Live Aid when it was on, and getting up before my parents did so I could see the beginning. The highlight for me was seeing Duran Duran, which was my favorite band of all at the time.

MTV went south for me when the shows overtook the videos.

I'm older than all of you, but I was an MTV fan for the first few years or so. My little sister was a Duran Duran fan (Man, now I feel downright ancient!)

Mmmmm.....Adam Curry Hee.

I too, lost interest when the shows started taking over, although I did like "Kenny wasn't like the other kids....TV mattered, nothing else did. Girls said yes, but he said no....now he's got his own game show." Man, I kicked ass on that show.

What was the first video you ever saw? Mine sucked (up all night by the Boomtown Rats--and I like them just not that song with lack of melody) but my husbands first video was safety dance by Men Without Hats (one we still love--we have their greatest hits cd)

I remember really loving that strips torn cloth skirt thing Pat Benetar wore in Love is a Battlefield. I tried to copy it. ha ha. *never get fashion tips from MTV* I also remeber the acting in that one--it seemed revolutionary at the time. And the "acting" in Til tuesday's Voices carry.

Hm..the first "video" I can remember would either be maybe the Beatles' Yellow Submarine or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (for which I had a weird fascination, circa age 8 or 9).

Holy crap, I forgot about Adam Curry, somehow. He was pre- Rikki Rachman, right?

Adam Curry's hair was so bad. And it was so huge it needed its own zip code!

I liked Remote Control too.
