I was just wondering what every ones thoughts were on 2012. Do you think the world is going to end.... Mayan calendar ends etc. Do you believe it?

Personally I didn't originally believe it but they said a host of smaller events will lead up to the big end. There has been lots of things happening. The big oil spill in America, Japans floods, Rioting in the UK. Not to mention the weather is going crazy at the minute, I'm starting to worry a bit.

That the mayan's haven't predicted anything wrongly yet.

Hind sight is 20/20. It's easy to look back at vague predictions and morph recent events to shape them.

All the ending of the Mayan calendar means is that it is going to start over again. It's goes in a cycle. That's all, no big apocalypse.

Quite a few astronomical events... which happened scarily close to when they said they would happen. As far as I know they haven't predicted doomsday, but they predicted the birth of a new world, the changing of the arctic poles. Its all meant to happen December 2012.

So far the evidence you've presented is pretty vague.

There's a lot of misinformation out there. I advise you to re-examine carefully whatever it is that has been so convincing to you about this.

I assume there is a Mayan calendar and I assume it ends. I don't really see how that equates to the end of the world. My calendars usually only go for a year and I don't really worry, come November or December that the world will end on the 31st of December.

Besides, my computer calendar goes for a really long time.

It's not clear to me, on what people are basing this concern about the world ending in 2012.

Quote:

Did the Mayan calendar predict the oil spills, floods, rioting, or crazy weather? I don't understand the relation.

Terrible tragedies have been happening throughout history, for thousands of years. If you feel like things are "coming to a head" now, it's probably because you're alive and aware of it now.

I'm assuming you mean the reversing of the magnetic poles....this happens every so often and nothing tragic comes from it.

Here's a little info on it from NASA; it's quite interesting. Earth's Inconstant Magnetic Field.

which astronomical events?
most astronomical "predictions" are pretty straightforward (but still a great accomplishment for that time) if you have the right information and tools. the mayans weren't the only ones to figure out the movement of the stars and planets through the sky and events related to that. but i'd be very impressed if they accurately predicted a supernova becoming visible or something similar

Quote:

I agree.

It happened all the time. Every year there are a bunch of earthquakes, tsunamis etc. Some of them are bigger than others. But if you look such huge events are happening forever. I think media now tries to present it in a more dramatic way

I don't believe the end of the world is predictable, especially since all of the past predictions were wrong.
