If anyone ever asks me why I'm against dog racing these are sadly the types of stories which makes it so easy to explain

This one man had 10,000 dogs delivered to his house, shot them each individually in the head, and then buried all 10,000 of them on one acre of land?

That's kind of hard to believe. I hope it isn't true.

i am not a fan of any racing industries. i do believe there are owners of racing animals that care about them as more than a money making machine, but regardless, it is exploitation for human gain.

more disturbing to me than the industry however, are people like mr smith.

It is charming how he calls terminating a life with a bolt gun - putting an animal to sleep. If you 've seen footage of either, it is apparent that the methods could not be further from each other in similarity.

he buries the animals on his property???

Oh, and doing his last dogs a week ago hardly qualifies him to say he no longer puts dogs down. More likely, it just looked better in print.

Creep.

I have 2 rescue greyhounds from the Wimbledon track.

This guy made me feel sick to the pit of my stomach. He even had the cheak to moan that he had to kill so many dogs one morning it made him late for work. His father killed the dogs before him-a 'nice' little family business then. He's 81 now, and I'd do time to get both of those bastards in their breeseblock shed and shoot them with the bolt gun, bung them in a wheelbarrow and bury them. After all, I'd just be doing a service like the man said.

He recons he uses one field every 3 years, then he can use the original one again because the bodies have decomposed enough.

All I can hope is people see the article and consider getting a greyhound as a pet. I can't stress enough how easy they are to care for (VERY lazy!) and incredibly loyal. Please look at the Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare site-

www.hershamhounds.org

or whatever rescue centre is nearest you. There are hundreds.

The sooner we stop racing the better.

I am not sure this story is true. In the past, this industry has had its problems, but they have turned the corner on this. There are a lot of anti-greyhound racing groups which keep spreading the same old stories to advance their interests.

In the US, the racing group which controls Greyhound racing is working towards a 100% adoption rate for all racing greyhounds by 2007. One would wish that other racing interests (T-breds, Standardbreds) would adopt such a policy. In fact, at the track in Bridgeport, CT, they medically treat any greyound injured in the race, regardless of cost to save the dog for retirement.

I am not saying there are never abuses; unfortunately, there are people who always play outside the rules; they need to be handled accordingly.

Read the article. It says that "this man kills dogs for 40 licensed trainers and that there are probably 10,000 dogs buried in his field." It also says that "people have been going to him for years. Many bigwigs knew it was going on."

There's a picture with the article.

there's a story on bbc about how he's getting death-threats now: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/5189956.stm

I particularly like what one of his friends says in his defence

Quote:

It's been recognised that he's not doing anything illegal, so what does it matter if it's 1,000 or 10,000?

People with standardbreds do have a plan for retired racing horses, they sell them to the Amish as carriage horses. I spoke with someone who boards them.

This story is 100% true.

The BBC had an undercover reporter record a conversation with him. He posed as someone wanting to get 8 dogs killed. Smith's wife answered and said he takes collections at 9.30 every morning at the front gate. And not to ask for a discount on the £10 a head just because he wanted 8 killed. He was then filmed (several times covertly) taking the dogs and money at his gate, taking them over to a shed, then a little while later bringing out the dead dogs in a wheelbarrow. He has a little JCB thing that he then buries them in.

Most people that are involved in the retired/rescue greyhound world always knew this sort of thing goes on. In some ways these are the lucky ones. Many have their ears cut off (to remove id tatoos)and are abandoned to die. There was a greyhound found in the Welsh country side with both ears cut off and a bolt gun injury to his head. He was still alive.

But this is not some publicity stunt to highlight the cause of retired greyhounds. This is reality.

Unfortunately, many of the horses that are sold to the Amish for carriage horses either head straight to the feedlots or are used as a carriage horse and then sent to the sales.

I believe if you go to www.ustrotting.com website, there is a link to an article where they talk about rescuing a standardbred from the sales.

So a reporter actually took 8 LIVE dogs to this man to have killed!? Just for a story?

No. He said he had 8 dogs he wanted killed. The conversation he had was by phone. This reporter then secretly filmed other dogs being dropped off and killed.
