lavender phase | I made this but because I do not care for veganaise I mashed half of a advocado and loved it ! Next time I may add chopped sweet roasted red peppers instead of relish .... |

I made some today. I just mashed the beans up with a potato masher. Got a nice texture I must say. I also added kelp flakes to give it a "fishy" taste. I think next time I'll use Dulse flakes, since the kelp was a sample and kinda subtle. I think the dulse will be a bit stronger of a flavor. But it's got a nice texture. I think next time I will use a touch of lemon juice to tang it. I didn't add onion, I think I may add that next time. Maybe some siracha or garlic powder, since that's what I used to do with Tuna when I was omni. Enjoying it with some crackers since we're out of bread ![]() |

I finally got around to trying this and have made it twice in the last week. ![]() I've got my mom hooked on it too. It tastes nothing like real tuna to me, though, which is a good thing. I never liked tuna sandwiches as an omni. |

Yeah it's about the spices for me! But, the flavor of the chickpeas does remind me of tuna, kind of. It's hard to explain. All I know is that I LOVE it and my mom ended up eating almost all of it, so now I will be making more. I might have to make double or triple batches of this stuff. I'm not mad at my mom for eating it because I'm optimistic that this mock tuna will help convert her from her pescetarian ways ![]() |

Ah! Makes sense. So maybe the recipe should be called "onion-mayo-relish-celery" salad? ![]() |

I think many people associate "tuna" flavor with the onions, celery, mayo, etc that is in this, seeing as that's how people often prepare tuna. |

I thought "the yucky fish taste" was what tuna was all about? So is it more the TEXTURE of tuna without the actual tuna taste? |

I've made it three times this month and introduced it to my roomies who love it. Mmmmmm.... Mock tuna. |

!!!! This is fabulous! I can't believe how delicious this is, it tastes eerily like tuna (minus the yucky fishy taste). This is a keeper, I'll be making this several times a month for sure. ![]() |

You can use whatever you like, Sassyberries. That's the beauty of mock tuna salad. I've used both with equally delicious results. Seriously, you really should try this recipe. It's wonderful! |

sassyberries | This sounds delicious....but I was wondering...do you use sweet relish or dill? |

So after reading through this entiiire thread and seeing all of the rave reviews, I'm totally going to make this tonight. I'm about to pick up some chickpeas in half an hour or so ! I was originally looking for something as a nice side dish for a BBQ because that's what my dad is doing for his birthday today but I stumbled across this and thought, "screw it." I want me some mock tuna salad! :P I'll post what I think after I make some ![]() EDIT: oh my effing stars. This stuff is what heaven would taste like if it had a flavour. My new favourite food! HOLLA! |

Make a cheese sauce with it, add it to a quiche recipe or just munch it straight from the tub :P Almonds and Raisins in town and that delicatessen place in Jesmond are the only places I can think of, although health shops elsewhere might stock it. |

*gasp* There are many threads here on VB devoted to Nutritional Yeast, and everyone has a "favorite" use, (personally I do not see the necessity of it in this particular recipe, it doesn't add any "tuna-fish-likeness" to teh end result and it's good without, but that's personal preference...). However, that said, I like Nutritional Yeast in so many things. Where to start... I add it to homemade pesto, vegan "alfredo" sauce, vegan mac-n-"cheese", homemade seitan, tofu scramble ![]() |

Everything. I'm not a fan but people use it to make vegan nacho sauce, on popcorn, pasta, veggies etc. It has a nutty but slightly cheese-reminiscent flavor. |

Yay I made it & it WAS so good! I did end up finding nutritional yeast at whole foods (it was expensive though ![]() P.s. I used a potato masher & it worked fine. I also used a fork a little bit to get some stray beans, but mostly the masher |

AwardTour | +1 on skipping the yeast. I eat this stuff all the time and have never used the yeast. i also just make it and eat it, without refrigerating it first. also, I think it definitely tastes similar to tuna salad. lol. |
