Even living in my very own house, I occasionally wash a dish that has a built-up meat residue on it. It's a lot like cleaning the toilet, scooping up the dog mess, or moving the old bags of lawn clipping out by the curb. The job's disgusting, but it has to be done. The good news is that when you move out on your own one day and get a place that is truly all your own, you don't need to have one morsel of non-vegan food in your home if you don't desire it. (I tend to let people do as they wish in my house as long as they're not destroying the house or hurting each other. Most people are a bit stricter than I am.) One day you will be out on your own. Just remember that. Then you won't have to clean your toilet, but boy it'll get di-gusting. Froggy PS. Thanks for helping your mother out around the house. We adults need all the help we can get. (Seriously!) Quote:

bethann | Could you just get your own gloves? If you get a pair of the really heavy yellow ones they should last a long time. |

We sometimes have to do what it takes to make a family work as a unit. Everyone had great advice about the gloves and also about your family throwing away their remnants before placing a dish in the sink. I'm the wife and Mom of meateaters therefore I have to cook for them as well as do the dishes--actually, I don't have to, I choose to. We take care of each other and are tolerant and respectful of each of our choices. I'm sure you'll find a peaceful solution--good luck ![]() |

I found a mug stuck way in the back of my fridge with meat drippings in it. It must have been there for years (yeah, I clean out my fridge now and then! but this was way way in the back. ![]() Anyhow, I scraped the crap out of it into the trash (it smelt foul!) rinsed it out with lots of scalding hot water, and put it in the dishwasher. When I took it out, I gave it a sniff. It still smells of dead things. ![]() Not only do I not want to wash meaty dishes I'm not sure I even want to keep ones that have been meat-ified ![]() |

I was wondering about cleaning the toilet after an omni has used it. As for the gloves, a lot of non vegans wackos where gloves to wash dishes. |

GhostUser | I have to wash dishes for my grandmother sometimes, and she eats meat on occasion. I use gloves though. Unfortunately I can't say "wash your own dishes" as she's polio stricken and can't do it herself. |

I dont like washing their dishes when theres meat, milk, cheese, etc. on them. Most of the time people havent eaten all of the food, so theres parts of meat still on the plate that I need to scrape off. Everyone in my house is a lazy slob. There is no chance of everyone just doing their own dishes. |

spehlbaund | Yes why doesn't everyone just wash their own dishes? This seems like the most fair arrangement. I wash my dishes as soon as I finish eating off of them. My brother is a total slob though so my mom washes his as well as hers. But if you can get everyone to follow it, I think the washing your own dishes thing is a good idea. |

I think that as a part of a family, and while living with your parents, you are better off to participate in the chores. You can't be expected to not contribute just because your beliefs are different. Rubber gloves would be a great solution, and I don't mind mind washing my omni hubby's dishes at all ( cause I love him, and we take turns, he often jumps up to do the dishes when I am still eating ) but I am sure to scrape / rinse the dishes really well first to remove most of everything. And just think, once you are out on your own, you won't have to do it ever again if you don't want to!! |

What about you younger siblings; could they be conned to perform your dishwashing chore for you for minimal payment?

I only have one younger sibling, and hes a little crap. He wont do dishes unless you annoy him for an hour, or you pay him $20. Plus hes going to be bigger and taller then me in about a year, so Id like to stay on his good side. ![]() Trading Work Ive already asked an older sister, and she said maybe after finals week. ![]() People doing their own dishes/people scraping and cleaning their own dishes- Not going to happen. My mom has made rules like everyone has to scrape their own dishes off and every does it for about a week before stopping. Trying to reason with my mom/rebelling against my mom- Shes not a reasonable person at all. Last night when I told her I wanted rubber gloves she told me I could be a vegan, but I couldnt be eccentric about it. ![]() If I rebelled Id probably be kicked out. |

I really should stop myself from posting in threads about how to deal with parents. I dealt by fighting like a wildcat and then leaving home at 16. If you follow my advice that's where it might get you. So, um, yeah. Don't follow my advice. ![]() |

Kiz | Just wash your own dishes and forget about the rest. If people want you to wash their dishes they have to eat veggie. That or eat of dirty plates. |

DoktorAtomik | This thread has made me realise how lucky I am. I don't think I've had to wash an omni dish once in my 17 years of veggieness. |

I know it's gross, but this may be one of the things you are obliged to do as part of the family. I never made an issue out of it in my family, although once in awhile, if a pot or pan or something was really greasy and gross, I would ask my omni sister if she would wash that out for me. My mom hardly ever asked me to help prepare food with meat in it. Of course, I would do things like pull casseroles and such out of the oven if needed, but the handling of meat was done by others. I helped out in plenty of other ways, too. |

Try to reason with her and if that doesnt work do a little rebelling. Theres a first time for everything. ![]() I think the paper/plastic idea is a good one. Better yet, you can be the one to use paper plates and leave your siblings to clean their own nasty muck. Ive use paper plates on a daily basis for over a year just because its so much easier than messing with the dishes. Edit: I know my solution isnt as environmentally friendly as I would like, but until my house gets a better dish washer its going to have to be. I have been using plastic plates and washing them by hand, then using them again. Better yet is when I dont have to use plates at all. ![]() |

Mskedi | Ummm... disposable dishes just doesn't seem to be the answer. It's entirely too wasteful (both financially and environmentally). |
