|epski||I've found my antibiotics to make me drowsy, as warned. Unusual in that most drugs that warn of drowsiness have rarely made me drowsy. Just took my second-to-last pill, though. We'll see how I'm doing in 2 or 3 days.|

|shinyredapple||You know, I read somthing about not using the computer,watching tv really close or being in a real bright room an hour before your intended bedtime, the idea being that staring at a bright screen screws up your circadian rythyms, keeping you awake because it makes your body think it's still light outside. I'll try to find link... it was an interesting article.|

|GhostUser||After the third night of not sleeping, I took a hot bath, followed by my cd of ocean sounds, and the locking of my door. I was asleep before I hit the pillow. 13 hours later, here I am.|

|epski||I have a HEPA air cleaner that creates a sort of white noise when I'm trying to sleep. It's a nice, shushing sound.|

|Cassiel||Epski's right - I forgot to mention anything like anxiety or stress. Definitely good things to check out. Another thing - ever meditate? For me, trying to meditate in a manic phase is a joke, but my brother swears by it for trouble sleeping. If things wake you up, some people suggest white noise (tuning your radio between stations, for instance, so all you get is static). That has never worked for me, but there must be some reason they suggest it. I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but sometimes you just have to wait these things out. I've had trouble sleeping since I was 6 years old. Eventually you learn to live with it, but I hope you don't have to. Hope you can get some|

|GhostUser||I too suffer from this malady. I agree that exercise helps me, as does an attack on the items that are causing stress in my life. Also, I like Ambien, the 10mg ones. They burn off quite clean and leave me with no hangover in the morning. Just don't drink much when you take them.|

Warm bath, reading... both are frequently recommended. Neither ever worked for me. Insomnia can stem from what's going on in your life. You might find it beneficial to talk to someone who can help you determine if that's the case, not just a general practitioner.
I get insomnia a lot. Tends to come with stress and having a mind that just won't shut off. When I zap the stress source, force myself to wake up early, even if I went to bed at 5am, and I exercise, I get better sleep.

|GhostUser||Its both. Its hard falling asleep, and once I do go, one sound will wake me right up, and I'm up for hours. I'll try the warm bath idea...and see how that goes until I see the doc. Thanks, Cass.|

I'm a fellow insomniac, and I feel your pain. My doc thinks I'm bipolar, but whether that's accurate or not, I sometimes go for a month or more at a time without getting a whole lot of sleep. Do you have trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep? If it's falling asleep, sometimes what works for me is a seriously hot bath - I mean, very near scalding, but don't hurt yourself. Hot as you can stand. It relaxes your muscles. Be careful though - some people (diabetics, pregnant ladies) shouldn't take hot baths. Sometimes hot milk helps. What I really have to do during those times, also, is make sure I have a bedtime routine to shut down my day. Usually it involves a bath and a book. If nothing else works, I resort to sleep aids, too - my doc has me on atarax, but I hate taking meds so it's seriously a last resort.
Do you work out? I was told not to do my workout late in the day (apparently endorphins keep you awake?), so I do it in the morning, and I work the hell out of myself sometimes. 2-3 hour trail runs knock me out by seven pm. Sometimes that's just what it takes.
You know the other stuff - avoid caffeine, don't try to use alcohol (I used to do this. It puts you out to begin with, but I always would wake up around 2 am unable to go back to sleep. Besides, they say the sleep you get on alcohol isn't as good.), lay off the sugar, etc. Don't stay in bed when you can't sleep, get up. This supposedly helps you avoid associating bed with wakefulness. I gotta say, that's probably true for me - when the first thing you think about on looking at your bed is, "o God, am I going to have another night like that?", it's not real conducive to falling asleep.
If you're not sleeping well, make sure you take good care of yourself. Don't operate heavy machinery (seriously!) and be really careful when you drive. When I'm in a manic phase I don't feel tired, but I know that the lack of sleep affects my ability to think clearly. Hope this helps. Ask more questions.
