Mr. H. I remember a rule I learned in Photography class. The best camera in the world is the one that you have with you. I guess the corollary would be something like, if you own the best camera in the world, its still worthless, if you leave it at home.

So the best workout, is the one you do. For some people, a gym membership helps them workout. Maybe its the social aspect. or that they spent good money on their membership and don't want to waste it. Or maybe they are creatures of habit and if they get into the habit of always going to they gym on _____ they always go to the gym on _____.

But for others the home workout is the best workout. You get up or get home and you just do it. Maybe there are less excuses. or maybe its the connivence.

anyway, just choose which would work best for you and Just Do It.

Danil Shipak It seems that if we call a workout it will be a work---out, means do work outside. In this case, the only gym can offer a perfect workout shot for anyone with a proper strategy. I follow home practices for fitness but they are not so impressive, may be a because of my diet plan. But I Always prefer to say GYM.

oldmanveggie I am fortunate in that I love to exercise. I love the way it makes me feel and I actually enjoy doing it, whether lifting weights or doing cardio on the treadmill. I used to love running but my knees can no longer handle the pounding.

I am all too well aware that exercise can never overcome a bad diet. This is a concept that many Americans fail to still grasp.

But exercise alone has so many great benefits, it is something everyone should be doing.

My company has a gym that has dumbbells and some weight machines as well as various cardio machines, so I work out during lunch time. I live in a small apartment room so don't do any home exercises.

Fromper I have access to a free gym in my apartment complex, and I've never used it. When the weather is warm, I do go outside to exercise semi-regularly. I tend to get lazy in the winter. I bought some weights, jump rope, and push up bars to use at home, but I never seem to last more than a few weeks doing that stuff before I get lazy and stop doing it regularly.

As others have said, if the goal is weight loss, diet is the key, not exercise. The one time I ever had real success losing weight, I did it by cutting soda out of my diet and counting calories on my snacks. And that's it - I didn't limit my meals at all, and I didn't exercise any more than normal.

Now my weight's back up, and I'm starting to do the same thing again. I've definitely been drinking too much soda lately, and probably snacking too much. But I also want to exercise more, just for general fitness. As I said, I do tend to go outside once the weather warms up. I just went jogging a couple of days ago, which was nice.

Purp My outdoor workout season is almost here, using walking, weight lifting, deep bends, and upper arm workouts. (Walking to the library to pick up 20 lbs. of books, and coming home and working in the garden and sweeping the walk).

I go about 6:15 to 7:45 am five days a week and it is relatively quiet. In January and February it picks up quite a bit but then goes back to the regulars and quiet again. At home I feel less self conscious and can take more time without the extra commute. It is also there on days when we have blizzards and I can't get to the gym.

The old gym I used to go to years ago had a swimming pool and whirlpool that I miss as the new one doesn't (my place of work changed and the new gym is only a half mile from my work). But the new gym is smaller, more intimate, and quieter. There is a lot more floor space for free weights and I feel less intimidated working out among the guys as they just seem nicer and more accepting there than the elitists at the other gym. I also wear my vegan fitness t shirt and a few other vegan shirts to the gym and have had some great conversations with others about plant based eating.
I still do all the things I mentioned in my old post here above, but am now a member of the YMCA gym. There is a HUGE dance studio/barre in there, that is open so that there is a track that runs around the outside perimeter. The studio floor is wooden and has a spring to it. At least two or three times a week I go there and have the entire studio to myself and dance my heart out. I wear an mp3 player and do dance improvisation (classical ballet, modern, artistic, NOT hip hop lol). I also do barre exercises and across the floor ballet and modern technique exercises. All my dance training is coming back to me, and I LOVE the huge space to move. I could never find that at home. In summer however, there are several parks around my neighborhood with large open fields that I can dance in, but I can't spin and turn and spiral on grass like I can a wooden floor. The plus side is I can do more floor work more freely on grass.

At the YMCA I have a fan following now lol. People have noticed my dancing and I get compliments and sometimes a small audience, which makes me feel good. It helps me overcome my self consciousness about my body. I have gotten to where I don't really care what others think of my dancing, because I am no longer training for a dance career and not trying to please a teacher. It is pure pleasure. Sure I do try to improve technically and artistically, but it's really more about expression and joy than anything else. When I have open space, and good music, that is all I need to block out anything around me and just move and create movement and shapes to beautiful music like Philip Glass, and Chopin, and Chris Isaac, or African drum music, or new age stuff. Bring visual life to it. So yeah, my basement, outside, and the gym are all my playground.

Auxin My home is right here, the gym is somewhere else.
No one plays loud off-key hip hop or howls like an animal in my home.
If I want advice, bad or good, my home has youtube.
Invest money in a gym and it vanishes, invest money in home equipment and it stays [sure, bands may wear out but who wears out free weights!?]
A gym has an impressive variety of machines and weights but a limited selection enforces learning of a wider variety of techniques.
I'll stick with home workouts for now.
The one down side is its quite unlikely for a random stranger to walk into my house, pick up weights, and end up becoming my friend- lol

kellyon I prefer to attend the gym, but a few months ago I had an injury so I had to quit my trainings there. Now I attend the physiotherapists at Eden Physio who use a traditional Chinese medicine to treat the body injuries.Want to return to my regular trainings at the gym after my recovery. Home workout is not for me unfortunately.

You should go to the gym , that's because you are sitting at home everyday that's why you should go out and be in public place for a while. Second If you decide it to go to gym 4 times a week then you must stick to this, don't skip it. Third- I was working out at home ( 5 days) but after few weeks I said to myself " I will skip training today and go for shopping" don't do this , don't skip it. I belive I'm more lazy when I'm at home.

SilasBer I prefer GYM of course. Because I have an intention to go there regularly on a fixed time. But at home I can not this continuously.

veganwarrior1983 If you are running 4 or more times a week, then foam rolling is essential as your IT Band will get very tight and eventually lead to injury.

In terms of health and happiness yes, but for reaching fitness goals (building muscle/losing weight etc) diet is very important.

Actually exercise is so good for you that you should do it regardless of diet. Good for your heart, your lungs, your bones, your brain... People who workout regularly are smarter, happier and healthier.

You hate what you suck at, that's most likely it. Find something you like. To me, riding pedals on all kinds of terrains is lots of fun. I really like pull ups and such, too. Or just climbing trees.

Better, they say. Try different stuff, feel them, see the results, observe them. Advice givers are not you, you're not them.

Why do you find experimenting so difficult? Is it because of nowadays google-effect from instant outer source problem solving?

janehut In terms of working out I always go for home workout. I find it better for me in terms of the fact I can then feel more comfortable at home and relaxed and I can make the environment the way I want it. Also I find it a lot cheaper to purchase gym equipment if I am honest than to constantly pay for a gym membership as once you have the equipment you don't have to worry about paying for anything else.

Gaby Lu if your just planning on doing cardio than at home would work just fine. you can jog outside or buy a tread mill.

Tues I think a combination of both is best (even though I prefer working out at home). By going to the local Y, I'm learning things like the beginner's basics of yoga, so I can eventually use a yoga app I bought to do yoga at home. (Which will be great for when I can't make a class or my anxiety is really bad that day.) I am also going to start taking PiYo and possibly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu there. Plus, they have two pools, an indoor track, and various exercise machines. I think you should learn as much as you can at gyms and then learn to regularly do your workouts at home. If you want a variety of exercise machines though, you better have a lot of money or just go to the gym/your local Y.

Edit: Another bonus is that a lot of workouts you do at home, like yoga, can be done when you're staying at a hotel or a friend's/family member's house. (Preferably, you'd have your own room, someone you don't mind seeing you workout, or you're at a point by then that you feel comfortable with whoever sees.

You mentioned 3 options for fitness. All the options are important to stay fit. But if you want to workout at home, it is difficult to maintain regularity. In the gym, you can concentrate more. So my advice is that, go to the gym and lose weight quickly.

cuberail i do both. i do my squats at home. sometimes glute bridges, too, because the movement is so awkward and personal.

h2o Easier to stay motivated working out at a gym. Though if I had a room in my home just dedicated to workout equipment that'd probably be what I prefer.

SteveW Depends how badly you want to lose weight.

If you really want to do it you can do it without purchasing a gym membership but if you struggle with motivation I strongly advise you join a gym. It becomes a routine to visit an environment where you know you're there to get fit.


Diet is a massive factor also, no point doing the exercise if you're going to eat junk food.

SilverCat If a perfect diet will get you there in 6 months, diet + exercise will get you there in 3 months. Besides who doesn't like to stay fit

SilverCat Try doing HIIT (look more into this on Gooogle or Yotube), if you want to lose weight quickly. EX: of an interval training program.

Run as fast as you can for 1 minute and rest for 1 minute (or 30 secs). Do this about 8-10 times. You can't do this right away if you are a beginner runner. It takes time.

Why is Gym better?

1.If you are a beginner for working out and you start to work out at the home for the first time, you might get discouraged and bored. But if you go to a gym, you will workout any way because that is why you are here.

2. You will learn about how to workout the correct way form the instructors. they will be able to correct you if you are wrong.


But.....

if you can't go to a gym for some reason.

1.Look into exercise motivation often to keep you going. Use music.

2. Make sure you have a mirror so you can correct your self (when lifting weights).

3.Tell someone to motivate you.

4. Watch a lot f Yotube videos and read articles on best home workout.

5.You do not NEED many instruments. there are many good body weight exercises out there. You can use a very few instruments if you want, at home.

Just watch a lot of youtube videos before you start if you are a beginner. Hope this helps

MikeFrans I workout at home using:

- suspension bands
- pullup bar
- reflex bag

I love the gym and I love using weights, but I just don't have the time and when I do have time most other gym-goers would also have time so the places are packed and I end up wasting minutes just waiting on my turn. Haven't been a gym member in two years now and so far I'm keeping up with my friends who are, in some areas they exceed me (I haven't found a weight-less alternative to a killer deadlift for instance) and in some I'm either right with them or ahead of them (pullups pullups and more pullups).

I think the best one is whichever one you'll stay consistent with! this varies by person. You can accomplish a lot with bodyweight alone.

But I agree with other posters that diet is key!

The modifiers are best to be followed at first - you don't want to injure yourself either. Any movement is better than none and you will get there with persistence . Insanity is definitely not a beginner program, so just be gentle on yourself. The strength and speed build with time.

Go Vegan I watched the Biggest Loser with Jillian Michaels and she was alright...

I agree a good diet/ exercise combination is important...Even if you ate certain foods sometimes that were a bit less healthy you could compensate by doing slightly more exercise that day...

MaiaElizabeth I have the 30 day shred video workout from Jilian Michaels which I bought last year when I was unemployed and had nothing to do. I have always been 120 pounds and Im 5'7. Because of my sedentary life of being without a job all I did was watch TV so I was gaining weight. I did that video for a week and lost 5 pounds. for lack of motivation i stopped. then again i started on january 2nd of this year. I didnt weigh myself at the beginning but i did take measurements and i have lost inches or centimeters or whatever because my work pants that used to fit really tight are lose yay.
i hope i can get my 120 pound body back

oh and i started the insanity workout today, well the fit test which i almost failed. and when i say almost is i almost broke my leg while stretching... ironic. anyway. i just hope i can wear a nice bathing suit for summer... im not even going for a two piece ...

purplefox I have tried going to three different types of gyms, none of them felt right or were enjoyable for me! So I bought a few Jillian Michael's dvds from amazon....I guess she annoys a lot of people, I never watched her on TV so had no opinion about her either way. For $6 per dvd, I think they are good bang for the buck!
