herolium Since I'm a vegan I have no problems with hunger because the calorie dense of most vegan meals is very high! You should eat more veggies and fruits between your main meals.

I just made spaghetti with tofurky Italian sausage
1 cup pasta=220 two cups is what I'm having
sausage=280 for one. I'll probably have 1/2, but one isn't a stretch
Right there, 520, add sauce, maybe some oil, veggies--olives, bread. Maybe a drink- a glass of wine?

tfvc.org You can go to a site like myfitnesspal and enter in everything you eat and get a good idea of your calories and nutrition count.

I don't think it's hard! Typically I have a light breakfast (eg: a piece of fruit - maybe 200 calories if that), a modest sized lunch (or I think it's modestly sized - probably around 500 calories) and a large carb-heavy dinner (lots of potatoes, pasta and rice - but I keep the fat fairly low). Regularly my dinner racks up around 900 calories

And I can easy eat 1lb of potatoes, especially if it's a nice chunky baked jacket potato.Yum!

Thalassa4 I think you likely need vegetable fats through oils in cooking or homemade dressings, avacado or guacamole, and/or nuts and nut butters.

Huge amounts of fruit, veg and grain will fill your stomach but leave you later hungry if there isn't fat and protein.

Vegans always get pissy about protein, but honestly some tofu, faux meats, peanut butter or sesame tahini dressing will significantly address this problem. You feel full longer and get some vegetable fats.

Even with whole foods diets, and Buddha bowls, the addition of some nuts or seeds, and avacado or tahini/hummus will address this problem significantly.

I make dishes with rice, green vegetables (broccoli or kale), and beans or tofu, with nuts or seeds, and avacado or tahini that I can't even finish *left over tomorrow* and leave me satisfied for hours.

Normally I feel hungry more quickly after meals of cereal or pasta with marinara sauce or snack/lunch of raw nuts and plain fruit. These are great light meals, but at least once per day you should eat more substantially.

I noticed when I first started trying to go vegan I craved potato chips a lot...I think that was about calories/fat. When I eat more substantial meals this doesn't occur.

It's also helped me to discern alcohol desire from just plain hunger. I think sometimes I drank wine when I was just hungry.

A Registered Dietitian can help you to figure out what might be missing in your diet. You can ask your parents to have your doctor refer you to one. This is much better than worrying, and trying to guess what might be wrong.

jjba Is that really that much food? Haha I've been brought up around big meals as my parents have quite active jobs so need the food, when I've counted calories I'm eating now it seems to be around 2300 a day, and was about the same when I was eating dairy, but I had smaller portions then. I'm pretty sedentary most of the time but I swim twice a week and cycle twice any time it isn't icy outside, but I'm quite small, only 5'2 and 120 pounds so I always thought the calories I'm eating was more than enough. I think maybe the assertion that it might be withdrawal could be a thing but it's been quite a while now so I thought that would have been over by now!

That's impressive! 450 grams of potatoes is 1 pound of potatoes! And you were able to eat a bean burger and a salad too? How many calories did you eat before becoming vegan? What is your height, weight, and physical activity level?

jjba It was quite a large dinner, 450g potatoes, a bean burger with bun and a largeish salad. I was bulimic as a teenager and ever since I've been able to eat large quantities of food but I've never actually felt hungry all the time before

SitaYunxin Also... Your body might be craving the casomorphins you're used to getting in cheese. Its a drug! And it's horrible for you. Cheese was the hardest thing to cut out in my life.

SitaYunxin You need healthy carbs. Don't be afraid of carbs. You especially need it if you're active. Eat fiber dense foods too to keep you full for longer. Oatmeal with fresh fruits are my go to in the morning!

LedBoots My guess is calorie deficit. Cheese has lots of calories and fat in a small amount.

Always hungry?

Since giving up cheese I've noticed that I'm always hungry. Would you say this is because I'm not getting enough calories? Just had dinner and worked it out at 900 cals but I could eat more and think I'll be hungry in about 2 hours. Is something wrong with me?
