I avoid palm oil when possible, although it becoming more and more difficult all the time. It is nearly impossible to avoid in personal care products because they don't usually say which oil their detergents came from. The issues to me are that oil palms can pretty much only be grown in areas that used to contain rainforest and many areas where oil palms are grown actually did contain rainforest in the last 50 years. This leads to habitat loss and loss of biodiversity. Oil palms are also grown in an area of the world where environmental regulations can be quite lax.

Boycotting is not necessarily the answer, as some of the alternatives to palm oil supposedly have negative environmental impacts as well and oil palms are a very efficient source of oil. However, I would like to see more progress in sustainable palm oil (stop deforestation now, rather than waiting until all the rainforest is gone) and more transparency in the supply chain.
Until then, I prefer to use canola oil and olive oil in cooking as they are the most heart healthy oils and don't require former rainforest lands to grow.

I agree! It isn't just in food, it is in shampoos, cleaning products, toiletries etc. And often disguised under different names.
And palm oil is not the only controversial plant substance. Cocoa, coffee, bananas, and cotton are others where ethical practices and sustainability are issues.
It can be a difficult subject for many because there are not always cheap alternatives for some of these products. Organic fair trade bananas for example can be very hard to find and much more expensive for someone on a tight budget. I buy fairtrade coffee but it costs way more than common brands. I'd love to give up coffee altogether but right now that is not happening lol.
Sometimes it is a matter of picking your battles and focusing on the most important issues to you, rather than striving to be perfect in every way. For many new vegans, it is overwhelming enough just learning the ins and outs of plant based living.
Awareness is definitely very important though! and ironically, in some situations, I believe the simpler one lives, the easier it will be to avoid supporting some nasty industries. There are natural rather than commercial alternatives to doing dishes, or washing hair, or cleaning your kitchen counter.

Unsustainable cultivation/harvesting practices and deforestation that is pushing native species to the brink of extinction (not just orangoutangs, though they are the most talked about).
I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more talk about this subject in the vegan community (that I've heard at least). I've been hearing about it for years in the avian community because it's super healthy for parrots and it's a big ol' controversy about whether or not you should be feeding it because of the environmental impact and if the "certified sustainable" sources are actually sustainable ext... It should be a topic of discussion in the vegan community as well because so many vegan products contain it. Also if companies like Cargill can really be trusted to harvest sustainably.

What's all the fuss about palm oil lately?
I have already heard a lot of people complain about it an being careful if it is not in their food..
Is it just because it comes from monocultures that destroy a place's natural diversity or is there a health risk as well?
