|Naturebound||These are recent pics of me. Not the greatest quality but I am not a huge fan of the camera lol. In the first I am at an outdoor movie event wearing my vegan T shirt. My husband is standing next to me but for the sake of his privacy I cut him out (no other reason lol). I love to cycle to work and the gym and mountain bike in the woods so I had to include a pic of me with my bike too. I don't think I look too bad for 43. My health isn't perfect per say. I have long standing but well controlled treated hypothyroidism I've had for 27 years (I am on a lower dosage of thyroid med in the 4.5 years I have been vegan than I was before though). I have osteoporosis diagnosed since 2006 due to a variety of reasons (NOT from strictly being vegan). I can still lift fifty pounds over my head and carry a canoe so my bones, while not in great shape, are not THAT bad. Otherwise though, blood and other tests have proven that I have excellent cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose levels etc. My hemoglobin and iron are smack in the middle of normal range. Vitamin D levels are good. Heart/vascular system are working mighty fine. I have a thick head of hair, no wrinkles, and I am active daily. I can kick some butt at the gym too.|

One is to select the "go advanced" button (below the reply to thread box) when replying to a thread. Once in that screen, scroll to the bottom and you will see a "manage attachments" button. Click on that and it will allow you to go to your documents on your computer and select the photo you want to upload. Once you do that, then click "upload" and then close the window. To make sure your photo will work, you can click preview post to see if it shows up. I'm terrible at giving written directions lol so I hope that made sense. If you store your photos in an online program like Flickr or Photobucket, you can copy the URL to that photo. When you post in the reply box here, look for a yellow picture symbol at the top of the reply box. Click on that and it gives you a prompt to enter the URL. Again you can preview your post to make sure it works. I hope this helps!

I too get comments similar to what you all are saying...
But then I get just as many nice compliments!!
Wish I knew how to put a photo of myself on here and you can see how being a vegan
keeps even the 60s 70s year olds healthy too. I see so many with diabetes it's like
an epidemic or something. That was another factor of why I went vegan. Not to mention
my kids who are all vegan. It is truly a healthy way to live. And I just had my blood work done and I'm healthier then I was 4 years ago!

I've just started going vegan and the first thing my family said was that I should go to my doctor to make sure there were no interactions with my medication. I'm on birth control and anti-depressants, and while I'm still taking them, I'm feeling a lot better mentally making this active change in my life than I have in a long time. I am going to discuss this with my doctor and psychologist when I see them next, but going on a vegan diet so far has been an amazing change for me health-wise.|

|ocrob37||To the OP, I think you look great and do not look unhealthy. I agree that you can not tell someone's health from looking at them, but I do understand the intent of your post. You are not too skinny and if you feel great then it is right in line with how you look. To Docbanana, your transformation is amazing. You look great and I would be willing to guess you feel great. I know a lot of people are vegetarian or vegan for different reasons, but I am sure your before and after pictures would definitely inspire a lot of people to eat a plant based diet.|

Here are 2 photos, one in 2008, the other last week. I went from a BMI of 44.4 to 24.8 (morbidly obese to high end of the normal BMI range)
Despite outward appearance, I was actually healthy in both photos, from the standpoint of not having any active disease that a doctor needed to treat me for (though when heavier I was not taking good care of myself and was on a bad trajectory, health wise).
I'm doing better today but still have some areas where I'd like to grow! We all do, I suppose!

However, I can't look at her and see her blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, bone health...or know if she leads an active lifestyle... Or if she eats an adequate amount for her nutritional needs... If she has energy...if she is happy and emotionally healthy...if her relationship with food is a healthy one... Outward appearance is only one indicator and an imperfect one at that.
I do tend to depart ways with the HAES approach when they say weight loss is impossible or actively discourage people from pursuing it. I find this aspect of their approach to be misguided. I agree that body size should not be the sole focus, people absolutely deserve respect from others and have equal worth regardless of size, that there are many aspects to health other than that, that it might be more practical to focus first on fitness or nutrition and adopting healthy habits regardless of size. But to take weight loss off the table for consideration as something to do for promoting health is misguided. Yes it is hard and might not be attainable for all or desired by all, not something we should hassle people about. Might not be the first issue to tackle. But some people can and do make permanent changes in their body size and for me this has been a hugely positive thing in my life. Did I hate myself before losing 118 pounds? NO. But I was not mentally healthy as my obesity was an outward symptom of unmanaged depression, anxiety, poor nutrition, and struggles with binge eating. Getting myself emotionally healthy was the first step in my journey and needed to be done before being successful with diets. I think HAES would agree with me there. Sometimes (often?) being underweight or overweight is more a symptom of something than the actual problem, the byproduct of an issue that might best be tackled directly (such as a physical or mental health problem, or poor nutrition, unhealthy relationship with food, not the right amount of exercise, etc). But once I was in a better place emotionally, I wanted to lose the weight that had been gained. I wanted to wear "normal" clothing again, to not stand out in a crowd for my obesity, to not take up two seats on an airplane, to feel like I looked my best, to do active things that were impossible or a struggle at my larger size, to minimize the risks to my health that my doctor was concerned about. So I chose to do the weight loss in a healthy and gradual way that promoted my health (not starvation or wacky fad diets) and that was about learning to live and eat better. I never learned about healthy and moderate eating at home, so I had to figure this out in my 40s! Switching to vegetarian and now mostly vegan was part of that journey (for mostly ethical reasons but also for health). As I understand HAES, they would say that I was wrong for this, that I was doomed to fail, I was not accepting myself enough, that I should settle for just being a morbidly obese person who is active and eats well because that is apparently the size I was destined to be. Or that I should just let the weight loss happen if it happens rather than intentionally managing my caloric intake. I say they are standing in the way of the last piece that I needed to do to restore my health!

I can't tell if the original poster is healthy or not by looking at her, and it's not my place to make judgements on her or anyone else based solely on her looks and specifically her weight, but I can tell you that making disparaging comments about people who are heavier is not doing anyone's health much good.
I like the Health at Every Size approach.

It was actually a very everweight, and long time vegan who helped me make the switch.
I'd just like to remind everyone that being vegan can be as unhealthy as most omnivores diets and that if you add some meat to an otherwise healthy diet isn't going to make you unhealthy
I don't mean to derail this thread, but one thing I don't like is the push towards outward images. Becoming vegan doesn't magically transform anyone to beaury anymore than make than unhealthy.

When I went vegan two years ago I had many people tell me to eat more and that I was getting too thin.
But I wasn't! I was well within the healthy range for my height, a little on the high side, even.
They were comparing me to the new American average: chubby and headed for diabetes and heart disease!
