I'm an undergraduate majoring in human services! I'm hoping to become a social worker at some point, but will probably try and get hired at a non-profit when I graduate. Edit: Also forgot to add I'm minoring in psychology and sociology. I love social sciences haha. |

thrillagorilla | I study in the Bay Area, studying English and Linguistics. There's more veg*n friendly food than I'd been used to conveniently having before starting there, which is so cool, although I have also seen many friends 'default' back to eating meat, usually via drunken cravings or pescaterian justifications. My rudemate also had a fruit phobia so it sucked not being able to conveniently keep fruit around. It'll be exciting to cook veg for my roommates in our first apartment together this coming year, though! My girlfriend is going to a college in the fall that has a totally vegetarian dining hall that's also popular with the meat-eaters | |

Undergraduate sophomore studying Aerospace Engineering! I'm transferring from community college to a 4-year this August. I'm not looking forward to picking my way through residence halls. I eat so much, I don't know if my meal plan will cover it. Hopefully my roommate will be ok with me keeping a banana stash. |

@River
That's so cool!!! Good for you for taking a stand in your career for what you believe in. You are part of a revolution!! @lookforstars Nice! What are you planning on doing with that? Historical geology seems so fascinating to me...are you working on a particularly emphasis or sub area of geology? |

I am going into law school in August for (hopefully) animal law. My undergrad is an interdisciplinary concentration, "Law, Diversity, and Justice: Animals" If I could, I would just permanently be a student. but then I suppose we all are. |

Such a varied career path, beginning with one little subject....And not having to deal with people you say? Interesting :P I'm more of a 'words' style gal these days. I prefer the formulas that sentences and language hold. Besides, being in awe of those that can do maths is it's own little reward. |

@custardpie
: Well that lines up nicely with being a veggie! Awesome. ![]() @RedTeaAddict : That's great to be following a passion. ![]() @Tiger Lilly : Many math majors end up teaching, either at the K-12 level, or in higher learning settings. I would say at my school a majority of us wanted to be teachers. I probably wouldn't mind being a teacher, but I would need more schooling for it (either a master's or a credential bare minimum) so I figured I would just go back to school and do something that I really enjoyed while I was spending more time and money anyways. I would say other jobs for math majors include working for the military (probably as cryptographers), being an actuary (they analyze risk and mostly work for insurance companies), programming or IT jobs should be relatively open to math majors, especially if they have some programming background, and I would hope they would be valued/sought out in the financial industry as well, like accounting or financial planning. Operations Research (kind of like company logistic stuff more often than not) is another field that mathematicians can go into. Statistics and biostatistics are also really big fields right now. (Reading minds/biotech is pretty important) Engineering might also be an option if you have the right experience and know-how. In addition to all of that, as a math major, if you're really down on your luck and can't find a job, or are interested in being self employed, there is also a large demand for math tutors, which is what I do now to keep myself afloat while I go back to school. You can of course, work for a tutoring company as well. I'm probably leaving out a lot of other options for math majors, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. None of these jobs really appealed to me because besides the teaching or tutoring jobs, they lacked...people. I like helping people. So yeah...if that's not a priority for someone than math is a great major. It leads to a lot of really lucrative jobs and opens a lot of doors in STEM, because mathematics is the "Queen of the Sciences" so it can basically be applied anywhere. I wouldn't give up on any hopes for any jobs in the sciences or medical field simply because you feel like you can't do math. There are a lot of resources for help, and I think many people don't like or think they are "not good" at math-myself being one of them (I screamed and cried as a child when I was forced to do my math homework, and I myself needed a math tutor for ten years). Eventually you don't need anymore once you reach a certain point, and this kind of math knowledge is very common and accessible, and by that I mean there are a lot of resources either online or through tutoring (which I highly recommend). Many people have taken Calculus I and even Calculus II...which is as far as you need to go in most cases. Even people who are not "math people" survive these classes with some tenacity. I strongly encourage you to not give up on any dreams just because you feel like you can't do math. Don't give up, and let me know if you need help or advice. ![]() |

I'm no good at any of the sciency stuff. I try my best to understand it. I can balance my books and I'm quite good at handling money. But anything more than your standard addition and subtraction, bit of multiplication.... I just start rocking backwards and forwards, crying. Wish I'd been better at it, a younger me wanted desperately to be a medical examiner..... |

College/University Students? Anyone in school right now? Undergrads? Graduates? What are you studying? ![]() I graduated with a bachelor's of science in mathematics in December, but I just started going back to school to become a registered dietitian after doing some soul searching. After doing some "undergrad" work, I'll move on to a master's. Luckily a minor in chemistry that I picked up as a math major will help with my new coursework as well. ![]() Larnin' is fun! |
