I got horrible acne when I went vegan from ... B12 supplements! Once I traded them for another brand and form, it all went away slowly. I was also scared of it being allergy to soy. My point is that there are a number of reasons people can get acne. It's not necessarily the thing you think of first.

weaselbritches I've read about soy causing this problem in others, which may support what some of the other posters are saying. If it's not a flat out allergy, the only real way to diagnose an intolerance is an elimination diet.

Like smcarter says, it may also be part of the detox process. I didn't get acne, but I did have terrible sinus headaches for at least a month after I cut out dairy.

smcarter When I first went vegan, I had a terrible acne attack. I've always had problems, but this was one of the worst attacks. I moved to more natural based face and cleaning products and the acne has cleared up and my complexion has never been better.

If you are new to veganism, you might want to give it some time for your body to adjust.

I agree with others about seeking a doctors advice - but for the question in the thread, yeah, it's totally possible to be a healthy vegan without beans or tofu. I am.

Yes, it's possible to be a healthy vegan without eating beans or tofu. It requires more planning than if you eat beans and products made from beans, like tofu. Also, if you choose a vegan diet that does not include beans then you will probably do better if you exercise so you can eat higher quantities of food.

 

It's easier to be vegan with beans and tofu, that's for sure.

Whey is a dairy bi product, so that's not vegan :) you can get soy, hemp, brown rice, pea etc. protein powders though.

Have you considered getting protein from other sources? such as whey protein/protein shakes? I am going to make fruit smoothies and put protein powder in them. I am going vegetarian (not vegan) So I'm  not sure if the powder is completely vegan but it may be worth checking out. They have protein powder at trader joe's and whole foods as well and those are more organic versions so I'd check it out if I were you, that way you can eat fruits/veggies which may have small amounts but you can also have the full amount of protein that you need and won't get sick. =)

Natashaa I know several vegetarians and vegans who are highly allergic to soy. It's because soy is very hard for your body to digest, especially if you're allergic. As a result, it causes gas and may even show up on your face.

Even though you're intolerant to beans, you should try lentils. Out of all legumes, they're the most gentle on your digestive system, not to mention very nutritious.

Plus there's seitan, which is rich in protein, but kind of expensive.

Tom I agree with the posters above who suggested you get an opinion from a healthcare provider about whether or not you have food allergies. Im not such a provider myself, but it seems doubtful that legumes in general would cause acne.



About life without legumes: I have an ethically-motivated vegetarian friend in California who is allergic to legumes, and shes vegetarian (as opposed to vegan) for that reason. Probably grains alone could supply your protein needs without causing you to gain weight- especially the higher-protein grains like wheat, rye, oats, and barley (as well as amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat, which are not technically grains in the botanical sense but are used as such). However, I have found veganism alone to require more effort than vegetarianism did- and I have no other food restrictions to deal with, such as allergy to peanut or wheat. This is another reason to be certain that a food such as beans is causing you harm before you eliminate it. Whether you choose to stay vegan or not, you probably dont want to make things any more difficult for yourself than they have to be.

pandora9kry I agree that you should seek a qualified doctor to diagnose these food allergies. People are rarely allergic to ALL beans. Also, I had bad acne for years, and a friend of mine has very bad acne, and he's had it since he was a young teen, and neither mine nor his is food triggered.

IamJen Agreed with all who say that more investigation is warranted. Aside from soya, people are quite rarely allergic to beans. There are far more likely suspects, imo, Firstly, you're quite young, and may just be experiencing some hormonal changes. You've also described a variety of disordered eating in your other threads. Stress, water consumption, girly problems, too much/too little fat...and many other things can contribute to excess acne.



How long have you been having this trouble with acne? How long have you been vegetarian/vegan? What are you generally eating throughout a day?

clarita osita I'd suggest an elimination diet. If you think it's a bean that's doing it, cut out all nuts, beans and bean products until you feel better (but make sure you're getting some protein from other sources, like grains). Then add one type of bean or nut back at a time until you find one that causes problems, then don't eat that one. I've never heard of a bean intolerance (besides soy), though. But nut issues are common.

shineonyou How does one go about determining food allergies? Because all beans and most nuts is a very large group of foods to cut out without knowing what exactly is going on! You should really look into this before simply giving up all these foods.



I have a cousin who is allergic to soy, and while it is certainly possible to go without soy milk and tofu, it is rather hard to avoid soy completely if you eat many processed foods! She has a rather strong allergy.

SomebodyElse Yes, it is very possible to be vegan without beans or tofu. There is protein in almost everything, including fruit. As long as you eat sufficient calories from a variety of plant foods you will be fine.

There's protein in grains and nuts but you need variety in protein to get all the essential amino acids. I don't know specific amino acids in each food, but you need to get a good variety



Maybe you could try eating a little bit of beans (a bite or two) a couple times a day and gradually increase? You can do that to combat lactose intolerance, maybe it would work for you?
