rainforests1 I think someone should start a new thread soon. Personally I'm looking forward to reading the TV ratings as I think the show will be a bust this season but I don't think I'll be watching it myself.

GhostUser I wanted to remind American Idol fans of new judge Jennifer Lopez' incredible penchant for cruelty to animals. The picture below was taken on the set of American Idol during auditions this year.

rainforests1 What changes could he possibly do though? Shows get stale after a while and Simon was a big reason for the show's success. I think I'll be watching Simon's new show but not Idol. I just hope they end it soon instead of carrying it on like some other shows(Survivor and The Simpsons, for instance).

Amy SF What I know for sure is that former producer Nigel Lythgoe was brought back and has been in talks with Fox. He's also the exec producer of So You Think You Can Dance, and the format for that show was almost completely revamped for the just finished season seven. So I guess Fox is hoping that Lythgoe will come up with ideas for completely revamping AI and making the show relevant again for viewers.

I also know that Lythgoe and the other dance show judges are very very strict and particular about who they pick to compete on the show. I'm hoping that will be reflected in future seasons of AI, since I'm not the only one who noticed that AI's season 9 contestants were quite mediocre. Perhaps with Nigel having more influence over the show again, the contestants will be worth hearing again. (My hope).

WonderRandy AFAIK Steven Tyler has signed to be a judge. J-Lo is still in talks, and may still join the panel. News that Kara has been let go has not been confirmed or denied by anyone at this point, but is assumed to be true.

who knows who else might join the panel? I don't see it as a "replacement for Simon", so much as "a different face on the panel"... if that makes any sense.

rainforests1 So, is it official? Steven Tyler is Simon's replacement?

fadeaway1289 I've never watched the show or been a fan of it but my mom and sister are really into it. They loved the addition of Ellen and thought she made the show much more enjoyable although they said it was obvious that she felt really uncomfortable having to be critical of the contestants. They also began watching Ellen's show on a regular basis since she started on Idol and became really big fans of Ellen.

I understand Ellen's reasons for leaving and it appears that a lot of fans of AI are happy that she's decided to leave but I think she gave the show a great amount of exposure than it already had. She would always have the contestants on her show for interviews and performances. Plus I am sure fans of her show probably became regular viewers of AI because of her.

I'm surprised Ryan is still on the show. The guy has like a billion jobs.

WHAT??? You mean to tell me you that you don't feel TMZ is a reliable source? A gossip based entertainment news site isn't valid enough for you? Well I never!

LOL You're the one who posted the link.

WonderRandy I hadn't heard that Kara was fired. Good.

Kara was supposedly fired.

The new line up (not sure if it's true or just talk for now) Randy (meh), J-lo (eww) and Steven Tyler.

Well, I'm not sure we can trust the above entirely, because of this:

And three of the shows, Britain's Got Talent, America's Got Talent, and So You Think You Can Dance, are less than two years old.

First of all, this guy says that the format of AI is currently oversaturating TV, and includes So You Think You Can Dance amongst the shows doing the oversaturating. It's a DANCE competition, not a singing competition, and it has a similar format because it was created by the same people that created AI. Second of all, So You Think You Can Dance is currently in its seventh season. It's not less than two years old. How can I trust anyone who gets his facts wrong?

WonderRandy yeah, without Simon and Ellen... Randy and Kara will be the senior judges. craptastic.
07-30-2010 11:37 AM
rainforests1 They say J-Lo is the top choice for her replacement. Please cancel the show soon.
07-30-2010 02:33 AM
Amy SF Ellen's out...

http://www.popeater.com/2010/07/29/e...american-idol/

...and people everywhere are applauding.

Since I only watched the most recent season, I don't know what AI was like pre-Ellen, but honestly, I didn't think she was THAT bad.

And as for everyone hating Simon Cowell, too, I found myself agreeing with him more than with the other judges.

karenlovessnow I liked them both and I think Crystal is superior performance-wise, but I'm glad Lee won!!

I can't wait to see/hear from both of them again!!
05-30-2010 06:22 AM
sallyomally Same here, and I would definitely buy her music. I wish her all the best. She deserves it.
05-30-2010 01:19 AM
tomahawk275 I'm still a fan of Crystal, no matter what...
05-29-2010 09:39 PM
Amy SF Even though she didn't win, I'd still buy her music.
05-29-2010 08:52 PM
Joan Kennedy I've been listening to some of the Crystal Bowersox pre-idol recordings on youtube, probably from CDs she made to sell at gigs. These originals show her to be a natural at songwriting, and some of the biographical stuff is just heartbreaking. "Farmer's Daughter" has a line in it that goes "When you broke my bones I told my school I fell down the stairs." Some things are apparently a lot easier to sing about than to talk about. No wonder she kept saying she would do anything to give a better life to her kid than the one she'd grown up with.
05-29-2010 08:28 PM
sallyomally I believe Crystal will have a great career no matter what. In a way,I really think her not winning may be beneficial. Sometimes it seems as if the producers kind of force the winner into a mold in an attempt to make them into pop stars. I just can't see them doing that to her. Her style is so unique and refreshing. It would be sad to see her have to compromise that;it just wouldn't be the same.

Amy, it's OK kiddo. I will do my best to remember to use the spoiler tag in the future. This old brain sometimes doesn't work as fast as it used to.
05-28-2010 01:24 PM
rainforests1 I read in the paper today that Idol had its lowest ratings for a finale since season 1. They also mention Elton John as a possible replacement for Simon. I think ratings would be half as good as they are now if that was true.
05-27-2010 12:33 PM
rainforests1 Some parts were funny while others were embarassingly bad. I find it odd that Simon leaving gets all of this attention while Paula leaving got pretty much no attention whatsoever. I'm looking forward to the show Simon and Paula do together but I just don't think I can watch Idol anymore.
05-27-2010 07:23 AM
Amy SF It was probably my fault, anyway, reading this thread before the finale ended on the West Coast. I should have known it was possible that the winner would be revealed here before the West Coast finished watching. So I apologize for getting snarky about it.

I assume WonderRandy avoided the internet altogether while it was still showing in Hawaii.

bicker Interesting... this came up in the Couch Potatoes thread a week or so ago... kind of late now, for this season's AI, but something to keep in mind, if you participate in other television threads, in the forums here, or at other forums.

So this would, for example, prevent folks from discussing the finale of 'Lost', which is bring broadcast tomorrow night, until 2:30 AM, Eastern Time in the US (because the US is the nation of first broadcast, and Pacific Time is the latest time zone in that nation, and it is being broadcast 9:00 PM - 11:30 PM in that time zone). By the same token (and this is a matter of frustration for a lot of fans of the show), folks are already discussing the "Amy's Choice" episode of Doctor Who, even though it won't be broadcast here in the US until June 2, because the nation of first broadcast for Doctor Who is the UK, and it was broadcast there on May 15. It is up to viewers of the program to avoid spoilers themselves during that 2+ week period. (The UK folks snicker a bit when US viewers get annoyed about reading spoilers.... they've had to deal with us posting spoilers of US programs that are broadcast a few weeks or months later in the UK, for decades.)

Personally, I love using spoiler tags because they're neat. However, unless the thread establishes a firm policy, posted in the first message of the thread, or as a sticky for the entire forum, you can expect posters to follow what is the general practice, as outlined above.

Incidentally, after I posted that in the Couch Potatoes thread, the decision made in that thread was to spoilerize everything (always, apparently forever). In that thread, that makes a bit of sense, since it is such a catch-all thread, and folks discuss shows that, sometimes, other folks end up watching on DVD, years later.
05-27-2010 12:45 AM
FamousLadyJane Amy, I am really sorry. I felt like I was hoping on the band wagon in the discussion, but looking back I may have been the one to give it away. I hope you still enjoyed the show. I once had the WWW spoil survivor for me, it sucked.
05-27-2010 12:22 AM
Amy SF I was pissed off. The word "idiots" should not be taken seriously. I was just really mad. Sorry.

I guess I was also po'd because Crystal came in second, and I seriously think she's the superior musician. Yep, I'm sure her debut album will be really good. And there WAS an article in the LA Times recently stating that also-rans from previous seasons have done very well in their recording careers (so far), so winning apparently isn't everything.

In light of that, congrats to Lee for winning.
05-26-2010 08:47 PM
sallyomally Um. Wow. Sorry Amy. I guess I just assumed by the comments that everyone had already watched.

Idiots? Really? It's just a show. It's not life or death. I HOPE you're just kidding. Geez...

I do apologize for ruining your night.
05-26-2010 08:22 PM
Amy SF And this underscores why I decided weeks ago how much I hate AI.
05-26-2010 08:21 PM
Amy SF Thanks a lot, idiots. You should have put all of that in spoiler tags. The finale just started here in California.

I'm so pissed off.
