Hi, I am up on the NW corner of the state and got dead on hits with Andrew and Opal. Then there are the almosts....Katrina, Dennis... I am directly on the gulf, insure well and hope for the best. The best thing about hurricanes is that you learn early on how unimportant your stuff really is. You look around, grab the photos, shrug your shoulders and get out. |

As I said, I'm not overly concerned. I do need to go get some bottled water, though, just so I can let it sit for the next few months and avoid the lines if we really do get hit by a big storm. --Fromper ![]() |

So I'm in the dreaded "cone" for Emily. Time to go stock up on bottled water. I'm not overly concerned about this one, though. --Fromper ![]() |

I live about 30 miles inland from the Daytona Beach area. I don't do anything to prepare for hurricanes because I have no money!! We made it through 2004 and I guess we can do it again. ![]() |

creep | I'm from Tennessee and moved to Tampa like 3 weeks ago. My plan is to pretend that hurricanes do not exist. |

That time of year again. What's everyone doing to prepare for the season? I need to replenish my canned goods and bottled water. I already checked my flashlights and batteries, and I've got plenty of both. --Fromper ![]() |

i never worry about the hurricanes. i've got a house in clearwater, which is hard to hit, and one in gainesville, which is even harder to hit. not that it can't happen, but i don't even buy property insurance ![]() you pay you money (or you don't) and you take your chances ![]() on the other side of the coin, i'm on a national disaster response team, and i'll go whever and whenever anything really bad hits. i know it's terrible, but i love the craziness of chaotic situations. someone's got to do it, so it may as well be me ![]() |

Good. Well, not for Bermuda. I'm more on the lookout for the Louisiana coast as that's where my family's from. |

That one doesn't look like it'll come to Florida. They keep saying it's Bermuda that needs to worry about Bill. --Fromper ![]() |

unovegan | Bill is the one to watch for. My parents are visiting from Louisiana and they're starting to get nervous. |

So it's that time of year again. Time to revive this thread! Anyone here in the Panhandle? Claudette didn't look too bad. Anyone here on VB who got hit with it last night? Everyone survive ok? Looks like Ana's forecast track turned right again, so they're back to saying it'll hit southern Florida. But it'll be a weak tropical storm at most when it gets here, assuming it doesn't die altogether over Hispanola, which is a distinct possibility. I did some more hurricane prep this past weekend. I made sure my flashlights all work, and that I have plenty of spare batteries. I also bought a hand crank flashlight with a built in FM radio, so I won't have to worry about batteries for that. I also picked up some candles and a new lighter. So if I do lose power now, I have 6 big flashlights, along with 7 candles, and it's just me and the bunny in a one bedroom apartment, so I'll be well covered for a week without power. I thought of something else in hurricane prep that I hadn't done before - paper plates with plastic forks, knives, and spoons. In case the water supply isn't usable, I won't want to be wasting my drinking water on washing dishes, other than pots that can't be helped. So I stocked up on those over the weekend. As for food, I have plenty of canned beans, peanut butter, and jelly. I also have sterno for cooking the cans of beans. Anyone know if standard cans are safe to cook in, or will they melt? Just wondering if I really need to use pots in that situation, or just cook in the cans. I saw Froot Loops on sale for buy 1, get 1 free at Publix, so I picked up two boxes of that. It's vegan and works well without milk. If a storm is really going to hit (other than Ana, which doesn't worry me), I'll stock up on bread and fresh fruits and veggies right before it gets here, along with filling the gas tank in the car. --Fromper ![]() |

That's why I stock up, and I generally keep two or more flashlights turned on at once. I usually have one sitting somewhere in the middle of the room, and I have another with me for spotlight work. So even if one goes out, I'll have the light from the other to help me find the batteries --Fromper ![]() |

I stick to flashlights, not candles. They're just safer and easier to aim the light. --Fromper ![]() |

We've had it lucky in the northern part of the state (normally it isn't as ferocious as when it first hits land), so we don't prepare all-out like we should. Normally, when the storm first begins, raining and whatnot, we fill the bathtubs with water. We always keep a good supply of tape and wood in case a window breaks, and put out a large plastic garbage can with clean bricks lining the bottom(to hold it down if the wind picks up) to collect water. Then the food. As you said, cans of beans and soups, and we get plenty of bread(pumpernickle! yum =] ) and we make GORP, aka trail mix, with plenty of nuts and raisens and oats and granola. We go hiking a lot, so we also normally have dehydrated food packets just in case we run out of the good stuff. And lastly... my personaly favorite.. dried fruit! I simply adore Craisens and dried pineapple chunks. so.. thats what we do... =] |

Well, this is going to sound bad. I've lived most of my life in S FL. Been through hurricanes. And I've never done much preparing. *bag over head* Fortunately, my parents did though. ![]() In light of TS Fay, I did buy some gallons of water. Tomorrow I'm cooking a large pot of beans and some rice to have on hand, some bread too. We have PB and J and bananas. Some canned veggies. I think we'll be ok with that IF something happens. I don't think we'll get it too bad up here (Jacksonville). I hope not anyways. I already told DH that if the weather gets too bad and they are making him come to work, he's staying on base b/c I won't be driving. We only have one car and he doesn't drive. But hopefully it won't be too bad. I haven't checked the news today beyond hearing on the radio that Fay had made landfall in the Keys. |

Ok, so we probably should have had this conversation earlier, rather than waiting until after TS Fay has already hit the keys and is on its way to becoming a hurricane over SW Florida. Normal hurricane preparation procedure says that you should stock up on enough food and water to last a week without electricity, running water, or access to buy more, including one gallon of water per day per person. I've never been through one of these things as a veg*n, though I prepared pretty well last year and this year. But what foods do you keep around as part of your hurricane supplies? The obvious canned foods are beans and soup. Baked beans were on sale for buy one/get one free about a month or two ago, so I stocked up. I've also got chick peas, and Progresso lentil soup. Last year, I tried the single serving, non-refridgerated boxes of Edensoy soy milk, but I didn't like the taste. This year, I picked up Rice Dream instead. I've never had rice milk before, so we'll see how I like it. Right before a storm hits, I make sure I have dry cereal, bread (bagels!), fresh fruit, and carrots for me, and I buy leafy greens to feed my bunny. Snack food is pretty good, too - after all, pretzels and potato chips may be nutritionally void, but at least they're heavy in carb calories, so they can keep you going short term if you don't have anything else. Any other suggestions? What do the rest of you stock up on? --Fromper ![]() |
