MaryToulouse I've just been caught out by whey in muesli, the shame.



I wrote to Quorn last year because their advertising campaign completely glossed over the fact that they were a vegetarian product, and they were focussing on the low-fat health aspect of eating their stuff. I was angry about it because I thought they were alienating their core-consumers. They never replied, which made me angrier, but they did stop showing the adverts quite quickly. . .



Anyway, I'm vegan now, so I've boycotted them anyway. Ha.

Tom My main problem with eggs is how they turn up in commercially-baked things like brownies or cinnamon buns. It's annoying, but at least it doesn't adversely impact my health to avoid sweet things.



The owner of a small local lunch eatery knows I'm vegan as far as diet goes, and initially warned me that their new home-made black bean burgers used egg as a binder. But they just use a bit of flour now.

Also, I agree with Rockabilly; it's amazing to see the number of products which contain unneeded animal ingredients. If bread, cakes, pastas, pies, sauces, and other goods can be made just as well without eggs, why do they contain them?

Tofu-N-Sprouts I have trouble finding bread without whey, but never see eggs in regular bread, ever. Sweet cakes and pastries maybe, but just regular sandwich bread? Eggs, really?

Moonlily I'm anaphylactic to eggs (deathly allergic) and so I hear ya. I would look up on google allergy info with eggs and ingredients to watch out for, one definite is lecithin, but theres quite a few. Even flu shots have egg in them...wtf...

RockabillyVegan I really don't think that eggs will make or break a product. If they have good enough chefs than they don't need to worry about the taste changing for the worse. There are so many companies that have vegan faux meat that is absolutely wonderful! You don't need to rely on morning-star alone!

Very true. I used to be a huge fan of Morningstar's spicy black bean burger, even before I gave much thought to giving up meat--I simply liked how it tasted. The company makes a vegan burger (with totally different ingredients) and it is, in my opinion, terrible. I've made vegan black bean burgers at home, and it's really tough to get them to stick together in neat little patties; they tend to fall apart on me. And I hate to admit it, but I don't think mine are as good as Morningstar's. Vegans make up less than five percent of the population, and given the overlap with raw foodists, locavores, and organic/natural food fans, I can't imagine there's more than a 1% market share to be gained by veganizing their products, while doing so would almost certainly negatively impact the flavor profile and upset some long-term customers.



It's unfortunate.

This is actually true.



I used to eat the Morningstar faux nuggets and faux buffalo nuggets, which aren't vegan, and they have a much chewier, more meat-like consistency than than Boca's vegan chik'n nuggets, which I currently consume.



Sometimes it's hard to replace egg in things, just in general.



I've never tasted Quorn, but I'd doubt they'd be able to make a vegan version with the same consistency.

Honestly I've found that if given two options, the vegan one is usually tastier in my opinion. For example, all vegetarian hot dogs I've tried have been gross, and they've all contained egg. Smart Dogs on the other hand are vegan and absolutely delicious. I'm not saying it's necessarily the egg that makes the others taste bad, but maybe whatever the vegan brand (LightLife) is using as a binder instead is just better tasting. Vegan products are also the ones my omni bf enjoys the most-- he says they taste the best and most 'realistic'.

cadellin I suspect that it's largely down to the cost of the raw materials. I wouldn't be surprised if egg and dairy products are actually cheaper for the manufacturers to buy in bulk than vegan alternatives due to economies of scale.

and I'm not sure how much the eggs/milk effects the taste of their products, I've eaten a lot of vegan faux meat that has tasted wonderful. I think just about every ingredient can be replaced without effecting the taste (to a certain degree for some things).



For example, I prefer cookies with egg replacer than how I remember "regular" cookies tasting.



I think it depends on the cook, I think they could make tasty faux meats without egg/milk, after all a number of other companies have already done so.

I wish Quorn would go vegan, too. I'm transitioning to vegan right now, and I have a mild soy allergy. I CAN eat Morningstar and Boca and soy "meats", but only certain things in moderation, and I'm usually a little itchy and uncomfortable when I do. I don't want to have to give up Quorn.

Eggs make the texture of their products better, so their foods wouldn't be the same without them. But I definitely agree; morning-star should make their products vegan to appeal to a wider market... RockabillyVegan ^well not just because they can be made without the ingredients, some of them are totally unnecessary! The best example is bread, bread is made with flour, yeast, water, salt, and sugar (sometimes oil), but the bread you buy in the supermarket has tons of other crap thrown in there! And not just animal ingredients, there seems to be a lot of other chemicals thrown in as well.

Many of the meat substitute products do have egg whites and other ingredients in them. I wish they would go total vegan. I think they would see their sales go up.

I don't understand why morning-star has eggs in their products, I would think that if you are going through the trouble (so to speak) to make a faux meat suitable for vegetarians, wouldn't you want to make it suitable for vegans as well?!

Bells Honestly, you just have to read the ingredients! Eggs and other animal products always seem to pop up where you least expect it, but the quickest way to scan for eggs is to look for the boldface "Contains:" (the allergen statement) at the bottom of the ingredients. Other than that, you have to read to be sure.

Guitar_tech92 Im horrified at all the things that have eggs in them, from you more experienced vegans, can you give me a heads-up of foods i may surprised have eggs (and things with eggs) in it?
