Just sayin'.

Of course, this could work the other way as well, as I become more peaceful, my desire to virtually knock peoples' heads off with a shovel isn't as prolific. Probably the two work together. Our thought patterns mimic what we are exposed to. In a similar way a child will learn to solve problems through rage if his/her parents solve problems through rage. Our attitudes and internal functioning will mimic what we indulge in, regardless if our exterior actions do or not.

I had extreme road rage during the years I indulged in violent games and media.

I no longer do.

That's great! I am trying to do the same thing. Care to share your plan?

SayTheWord I love satire and understand where the GTA games are coming from. Yet there is a line that sometimes gets crossed pushing people like Ann Coulter into thinking that it's okay to spew hate if you finish every sentence by saying "I'm joking".

I fugure if I can dish it out, (http://youtube.com/watch?v=a15KgyXBX24), I need to be able to take it too.

MsChris I'm a 37 year old mom and wife, and I think it's funny too. But even if I didn't find it humorous, I think if you're offended over a joke in a video game that you don't even play you're looking in the wrong places for stuff to get pissed about. I can think of a million things worth being upset over, but jokes told in a virtual internet cafe called [email protected] (come on, that's funny right there) is not worth getting worked up over.
05-21-2008 02:41 PM
Cissy pretty funny. kind of stupid, but entertaining.

LetoTheTyrant its a gae...it's an easter egg type thing im sure you could find racist stuff in there too...they're trying to make it as real as possible.

Correlation? Causation? I certainly don't have any tangible evidence for this apart from noticing those things in my life that change at the same time. I've also gone vegan in this time, grew closer to God, started to read more, and moved away from old friends. Any of these could be connected as well. A look at my posts from the last few months compared to a year or more ago should serve as evidence to the renewal (that I attribute to Christ, you may take it as you will).

But like I said, just sayin'.

Try a media fast some time for yourselves just to see. A month with no games or tv.

Perhaps games do impact us. Just as tv. Just as our friends. Just as most environmental factors.

Finally, something we can really get out teeth into, video games!

[/I]I stand corrected. I should not have mocked. After all, this is not a joke. I personally have 7 polar bear as pets. Once one of the polar bears ate one of my cats but, you know, that is a small price to pay in the name of polar bear rescue.

[/I]Again, I stand corrected. Plans are a very good source of fibre. Particularly housing plans. Once I ate one of the neighbours plans for their extension and this was a very good thing. Not only did I obtain a valuable source of dietary fibre from the paper they were printed on the once I had eaten them the council could not approve of the extension on their house. Imagine the noise of the builders!

I guess, however, it depends on the plans you are eating. If you find that someone is, for example, planning to go on a killing rampage at their local shopping mall then eating those particular plans might be a very good idea.

Finally, are all the GTA4 threads some kind of weird viral marketing campaign? I mean, I sincerely didn't consider buying it until everyone here kept harping on about it. I might even get it. It has polar bears! How can lose?

hehehehehe... ok I'm not going to catch up by reading this entire thread. I'm sure it's all very interesting and stuff.. but I'm at work.. LOL

Just my two cents - It's a video game based on controversy.. and I love it. Now, I don't want my son playing it, but I love it, and as I'm reading the first post.. I'm cracking up.

Don't take life too seriously guys. Just laugh it off! Like we don't pick on the omnis anyways

prettyvacant Even though they are taking the piss out of PETA, I feel offended by, only because PETA is like a fund, they wouldn't say **** about some childfund or anything like that, instead they are dry enough to judge people's diet, that's about it right. And guitar hero 3 come on this game is more addictive then ever right now!!!! and BETTER

*sigh* I wasn't trying to say that we are marginalised because we are small in numbers. I think we are marginalised because we threaten people.

Depends on how it's done.

That's a matter of opinion. It doesn't always make something offensive, but it can do IMO.

I laughed the first time I heard "People Eating Tasty Animals" to be honest. Not the second time, some jokes lose their humour pretty fast, but to take offense at stupidity would mean you'd spend most of your life in a huff.

How does that work?

Being offended by something doesn't mean that you spend your whole life being in a huff. It's quite possible to be offended by something, state your objection and move on without carrying anger about it around with you.
05-20-2008 12:12 PM
troub Between sniping elderly women and firing rockets at crowds of people and beating prostitutes with baseball bats, I just can't see a satirical joke against vegetarians as what is "wrong" in this game.
05-20-2008 12:03 PM
Kiz Just being a smaller percentile of the population does not make one "marginalised". I'd hardly call vegetarians, as a group, marginal. There's nothing wrong with someone taking the piss out of you, or doing likewise. I agree most of it isn't funny, and (an example is quoted in the first post) a lot of it is just plain stupid. Something being stupid, though, or based on daft inaccuracies, doesn't make it offensive. It just makes the person doing the "fun-poking" look a little dumb.

I didn't say I don't approve of satire in general. I just don't approve of it in that particular game.

In any case, I see satire as somewhat more sophisticated than the way it's done in that game.

I don't personally feel that marginalised, but as a group as a whole I think we are somewhat. We're constantly taken the piss out of in popular culture and most of what is said about us not that funny and based on a lot untruths.
05-20-2008 11:22 AM
Kiz Err... so you don't approve of satire?

Besides, we are talking vegetarians. We might be a minority in society but we are hardly "marginalised". There is a difference between friendly satire and nasty put-downs. My friends poke fun at my vegetarianism quite a bit, among other things. I poke fun at their lifestyles, too. Of course whether or not you take offense at someone poking fun at you depends on the context.

I don't like it when ANY marginalised, but harmless group of people gets mocked for no good reason, whether I belong to that group or not.

It's interesting to see that some veg*ns will complain on VB about how annoying their friends and relatives are for mocking their diet or lifestyle, but don't seem at all offended when they come across similar mocking in a video game. It's kind of fascinating to watch people shift their parameters on what they find offensive according to the package it's presented in.

Grand theft auto is by far the most disgusting game out there. I think you can tell alot about people by how they spend thier free time- I would never date anyone who plays this game nor would I ever let my future sons (or daughters) play this game. Strong words, I know, but you've gotta draw the line somewhere.
