dropdeaddale Don't worry about it! We will all slip up sometimes. Keep on truckin! I would just like to say that the support from this board is amazing and the most constructive vegan community I have been exposed to. I notice a lot of holier-than-thou BS going on and it sickens me. I love this board!

While you guys are on the topic of BBQs, my girlfriend's mom made me tofu with BBQ sauce and sesame seeds and it was AMAZING. I'm getting the recipe from her and she already gave me BBQ sauce to make my own. I CANT WAITTTT.

Alli Don't worry about your slip-up, just try hard to not let it happen again. I've been on and off of vegetarian for a little over a year, and a little less than 2 months ago I went vegan. It was really hard for me then, but my body got used to it and it's getting easier every day.

I also bought a couple of pop in the oven meals made by Amy's last night. I made sure they said vegan on them and checked the ingredients. One of them has tofu. I plan on having it for lunch today. I hope it is good

Those are the best frozen meals in the entire world. I have some on hand at all times. Get the pies, they're great!

DelicGrape I think it's normal to find it difficult to give up meat, especially if you were raised eating it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, like I was. There were a few times I gave in, or wanted to give in. Trust me, it goes away!! There is absolutely nothing about meat I find appetizing anymore. Just learn from your mistakes, and next time don't forget the veggie burger!!

PS: You might like to try other mock meats, they have a lot of different choices, chicken strips, chicken nuggets, veggie crumbles (for things like tacos,) and bacon. Some people like them, and some people don't, but it doesn't hurt to try. I personally love veggie burgers, and morningstar farm's chicken strips, ohh and their chicken patties...yum!

I am going to try the suggestions for tofu. I also bought a couple of pop in the oven meals made by Amy's last night. I made sure they said vegan on them and checked the ingredients. One of them has tofu. I plan on having it for lunch today. I hope it is good

ChiKat I've been a vegetarian for almost 3 months and I had an accidental slip up today. It happens.

I don't feel well so my neighbor made Ramen for me. She put in the chicken flavored seasoning. Without even thinking, I ate it- and realized when I was done.

I haven't had a slipup (accidental OR intentional) in such a long time. I feel so guilty

Daisy Rose i'm a vegan and i had some cookie dough this weekend! i blame the liquor though, it disregards all your morals and says " to heck with those, tonite ur gonna do what i tell ya!" just don't sweat the small stuff, work at it and eventually you'll succeed, try not to hate urself too, that just makes the process all the more hard!!

You also might want to try one of the other "mock meats." Tofu can be a bit of an acquired taste.

meatless another nice way to marinate it is using water, soy sauce, ginger, and sesame oil.

meatless I marinate half a block of tofu (as kristy described) in:

1/3 cup soy sauce

1 cup water

2 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp coriander powder

some lemon juice

You have to marinate for at LEAST an hour. That marinade isn't overly strong.

codemonkey There's a bit of a learning curve with tofu. If you don't like it the first time you make it, try try again.

Make sure you get the extra-firm kind if you want to BBQ it. What you need to do is drain it really well and then wrap it in a clean towel (or paper towels) and set it on a plate. Then take a cutting board and put it on top and then put something heavy on top of that (I use a cast iron skillet.) Leave it like that for about an hour. That will get most of the liquid out so it can soak up the yummy marinade. Slice it up into rectangles and marinade it. A super-flavorful marinade works well for this because tofu is almost tasteless. Next you can cook it. I know you can BBQ it but I haven't tried it yet so I don't have any tips or tricks for that. You can definitely cook it on the George Forman Grill and you can also bake it in the oven or cook it in a pan. It takes a while to cook. The longer you cook it, the less mushy it'll be. Make sure you use oil or cooking spray on whatever surface you cook it on 'cuz it sticks like crazy (it'll also brown better that way.) In the oven it takes about 20-30 minutes on 350 degrees to get a nice texture. On the stove or GF, it takes about 10-15 minutes (just cook it until it gets nice and brown and firm.) If you look at it and say, "that looks about done" cook it a bit longer 'cuz it's probably still kinda mushy.

groovycakes Some of you suggested marinading tofu to put on the grill. I bought some firm tofu last week. It is still in the package in the fridge. I don't know what to do with it. If I wanted to marinade some, how would i do that? Just like you would marinade meat? Also, could I put it on my little george foreman grill? What is the consistency of it when you actually eat it? I have serious issues with mushy food. Like I CANNOT eat oatmeal because of the consistency of it. YUCK!

compassionate1 Yeah, Heather, it's not worth beating yourself up about. The fact that you are upset about it is a good sign that you care enough to stick with it. I won't speak for everybody else, but I know I stumbled in the beginning. Just let it go and work on it for next time.

some times i fudged when my tastebuds, or habits, or convenience was strong. BUT I CONTINUED TO CARE, AND ALWAYS GOT BACK ON TRACK

maybe it's really like learning to walk or ride a bike. You're gonna fall, but it's part of the process!

Falling happens when there is something you need to learn, in order to not fall... right? might be knowing how to balance or move your feet... or it might be learning how to have a steady supply of vegetarian food... or learning to bring veg food to a BBQ... or learning how we feel if we eat chicken at a BBQ.

as long as we keep learning, we'll keep progressing to eating more and more vegetarian food ... and less and less meat. It's a Trend.

you are great for starting veg, and your caring will help you become a consistent veg

Bonoluvr Veggienurse, I have a yummy Pot Pie recipe from Vegan Family Favorites cookbook, it tastes almost identicle to chicken pot pie, uses tofu, its really good, if you want the recipe let me know

Thank you! I feel like a complete moron for ingoring everything like I did. I didn't want to admit it here- but I think it is important for others to know, so they won't do that same thing. It was like kids being peer pressured into drugs... well that was what happened to me. I knew better. I did it anyway.

Lady Clare How's this for 'sucking'.

I was a vegetarian for nearly five years- and really proud of it! Then, for some unknown reason, I ate (of all ridiculous things, since I never liked them anyway) McD's chicken nuggets!

Worse? I continued to eat meat for the last three years! Why? I have no idea. I KNOW exacty what happens to animals and yet I did it anyway.

I ate chicken and fish, and usually only 2-3 times a week. Almost all of my meals were LO veg. Why did I block the truth from my mind? How could I do that? After nearly 5 years of never missing meat?

I still don't know and I am deeply ashamed.

Last week I finally realized what I have been doing. No more meat ever again, and I am finishing up what I have now for animal products (mostly b/c I am a broke college student/mom so i can't just throw everything out that I just bought last week) I will be fully vegan within the next month.

I realize that I will make mistakes. I don't fully understand which products have dairy/eggs and what doesn't, but I won't beat myself up over it- I will just learn from it.

Now, personally I think what I did was %1000 times worse than one who *just* went veg messing up. Let's both learn and keep going, shall we?

meatless It sounds to me like the OP knows what she wants, but is just having trouble getting there. There is no reason for her to resume eating dairy and eggs since they aren't even what she's craving.

groovycakes, let us know if you need any help with figuring out what are some good alternatives etc. Oh, and tofu absorbs marinade really well if you squeeze the excess water out of it. We often marinate tofu for about an hour and then put it on the grill. I really enjoy it that way.

Hey, no need to be defensive. I'd ask that you try to understand what I'm saying with an open mind.

Which is that, from an animal welfare perspective, I think it's rather arbitrary and custom-based to cut out the flesh foods before the eggs and dairy. Since the OP seems to know that eggs and dairy are no better (and probably worse), why would she choose to go with custom and cut the flesh foods out first, if she's going in stages? One could as well cut the eggs and dairy out and leave the cow flesh, if they're going in stages. It just doesn't have the *name* vegetarian in that case, but the name isn't the important thing. Who dictates that it has to go omni to vegetarian to vegan? I'm agreeing that something is better than nothing, so why not choose the better something, if one is going to go in stages and leave some animal food in their diet for whatever reason? There's nothing that says X has to go first, although people are generally stuck (an earlier post in this thread illustrates it) in thinking that the order that one should cut out animal foods is: cows then poultry then fish then eggs and dairy. Why? It's a custom but a fairly arbitrary one.

Again, a lot of people who traditionally became vegetarian and not vegan did so because they couldn't see the harm in eggs and dairy. Now a lot of vegetarians are making the step to veganism because they do. But if you start out with that knowledge, and you don't want to cut out all the animal foods, it's not the obvious step to go from omni to vegetarian to vegan. From an animal welfare perspective one would take out the worst harms first.

shaved_women don't be so hard on yourself.....did you decide to go vegan straight from being an omni? if you did, that's really commendable.

i've been trying to go vegetarian since mid-september.....i only fortified myself about a week ago....occasionally slipping up. you're doing a great thing for the animals but it can be hard to stick to it in the gets easier, I'm told. I had to really build all the nerve I could not to eat chicken one day when I was hungry. I thought to myself that chickens are the most abused animal and it would be a lot worse to eat that than beef or pork (not that i want to eat any animal)

isowish lots of people slip up, intentionally or accidently, and it's no big deal. Don't be disheartened! Just tell yourself that it wont happen again (at least intentionally, most of us still end up eating non-veg*n ingredients at some point in our lives after being 'established' veg*ns), and keep doing the best you can!

veggienurse I am so sorry you had a tough day. We all have them somehow. Since you know that your husband cooks out every week, make sure you have plenty of stuff for you next time. Gardenburger has a wonderful riblet!! awesome. Grilled veggies are excellents. So have plenty of those chopped and ready for the grill. If your husband's sauce is that may go with anything you put on the grill. Try it!! I wish you the best!!!

I still have a love for chicken pot pie. If I ever go back to eating meat......the first thing I am going to eat is a chicken pot pie. But......I am sure I wouldn't like it as much as I think I do. Boy.....I sure do wish there was a vegetable pot pie that tastes as good as Marie Callender's pot pies.

Good luck and don't be so hard on yourself. Also, don't let yourself get so hungry. It is hard to make good food choices when you can eat anything in site!!

groovycakes I just wanted to pop back in and say thank you to everyone for the supportive words. I have to quit cold turkey. Or was it tofurky?? The thought of eating animals disgusts me now. That is why I am so upset with myself. I will just make sure I am better prepared next time. I can always steal some of hubby's marinade for my own food.

I have no issue getting rid of dairy and eggs. I already bought the substitutions for the few times I eat dairy. It just bugged me that I ate the rice with regular butter in it. Blech!!!

Tomorrow is another day!

Irizary She just started so she doesn't know how it will be for her. She didn't make a mistake with eggs or dairy though, so I don't how if she had planned to eat eggs and dairy but not flesh that would have helped with this.

Jessica Alana Well if that way doesn't seem to be working, what's better? A vegetarian who eats eggs and dairy, or someone attempting to be vegan who makes "oopses" and eats meat, egg, and dairy? I say the former.
