mackiesgirl What are the ethics of using buying an used wool or down winter coat or comforter? I have used a thrifted wool coat for 5 years. I always felt that that if the product was already produced the damage was already done. If I buy a new coat then there is the cost to the environment of going to the store, shipping and disposal of a new coat on top of the costs of the old one.Why not use one that is already here?

Linky Thanks Naturebound! I didn't think about the heavy socks I'll need this winter, so the Hemp socks are something I definitely need to pick up.

Thanks for the link, too.

Naturebound Hi Linky,

My winter coat is a North face brand jacket. I don't know if all of them are vegan friendly, but my particular one is. I found this guide that explains what some of the materials in winter coats are and what to look for when you don't want to support animal cruelty:

BTW, I live in NE Minnesota and it gets downright cold here in winter, so I do understand the need to be warm! I also have hemp socks I use when snowshoeing and hiking in deep snow as they are comparable to wool socks in terms of wicking moisture. I got them through Wicked Hemp company (ordered online). Otherwise, I have gotten by using heavy cotton work socks, and of course there are tons of synthetic style mittens, gloves etc that work just fine. If nothing else, second hand stores often have some decent winter jackets and often they too are made without wool/down etc.

Hope this helps!

Winter coat help!

Hey there. As a semi new Vegan I've had to make a lot of lifestyle changes and some have been easy while others.....have been a pain in the butt. With the colder season approaching I realized that my winter coats both don't fit and are not Vegan (Wool ), so I was curious to know what other Vegans wear during the winter. What kind of coat brands are safe for buying, which to avoid, etc? The only Vegan coats I've found seem to cost way more than I can spend atm >_>
