The place to dicuss local topics and to meet others in your area.

JLRodgers 05-13-2003 02:14 PM

No one in Illinois? or just no one notice that there's a second page...

smedley 05-13-2003 02:39 PM

i am in illinois--what do you mean a second page?? i had been watching for this one to pop up. is there a second one?

JLRodgers 05-13-2003 02:57 PM

The main state page shows states 1-30 of 51! I just noticed it today (I wasn't expecting there to be a saparate page).

What part in Illinois are you in?

smedley 05-13-2003 02:58 PM

chicago suburbs--you?

JLRodgers 05-13-2003 03:07 PM

Close to Illinois 1 (although in the southern/central part of the state) Close to Terre Haute, IN.

Baby 05-16-2003 10:15 AM

I used to live in Lake Forest in what seems like a thousand years ago. I never really missed it.

Michael 05-16-2003 11:01 PM

This is from an e-mail I received...

There is a house bill in IL that needs to be signed by the governor. It states:

Illinois: Ask the Governor to Sign HB 1089 To Require Forfeiture of Real Property Used in Animal Fighting Dog and cockfighting are illegal blood sports. These barbaric activities have no place in civilized society. The animals used in these fights are often severely injured or killed. Illegal weapons and drugs are often present at these matches.

Property forfeiture is a necessary deterrent to stop these clandestine activities. Unfortunately animal fighting is on the rise in our state. Promoters of these bouts should not be allowed to keep their ill-gotten gains.

ASPCA has a letter created and all you need to do is go and enter your name/address and if you want you may add some of your own words to the letter. It only takes about 5 minutes to do and if we can get it passed, it will be 5 minutes well spent!

https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/sit...ppmoreqc.app5b

Please pass this on to all of your animal loving friends.

carnelian 05-24-2003 11:39 AM

I live in Oak Park, a Chicago suburb. Thanks, Michael, for the ASPCA link. I've already signed it and passed it on to others.

Michael 05-24-2003 01:25 PM

I don't live in Illinois, but I'm only about an hour from Chicago.

GhostUser 06-08-2003 02:49 PM

anyone else from Chicago? there's a great veggie and vegan restaurant on the northside--The Chicago Diner. Good stuff.

Michael 06-08-2003 02:53 PM

I'm from 2 hours south, haven't been to Chicago Diner yet, though I've heard a lot about it. Have been to Soul Vegetarian for breakfast. Scrambled tofu.

GhostUser 06-08-2003 03:01 PM

come on up sometime and we'll go to the diner... Soul Veg is great!

GhostUser 06-24-2003 02:38 AM

Are their any Illinois animal rights activists, vegans or vegetarians on this site?If so would you be interested in joing an anti kfc protest this weekend?? If so,email me at [email protected],it would be greatly appreciated.

GhostUser 07-08-2003 04:19 PM

I'm from Illinois. I live on the South Side, and I love Soul Vegetarian. I had a Veggie Gyro from their the other day, it was ok I guess, I took the meat out.

Is the parking pretty bad around the Chicago Diner? I've never eaten there before.

neon 07-09-2003 02:32 PM

I am from Peoria, IL here

carnelian 07-09-2003 02:39 PM

Yippee!! More Illinois people!

smedley 07-12-2003 04:55 PM

i am staying downtown with friends to celbrate our birthdays--anyone know of any saucy nightclubs in downtown chicago?

Michael 07-12-2003 08:31 PM

I'm sure they've all changed since I've been there. Excalibur always seemed like one of the more popular clubs.

smedley 07-13-2003 09:37 AM

gobanana 07-16-2003 06:49 PM

I am new and I am from Lockport, IL, which is near the south side of chicago.

monkeyandbunny 07-17-2003 04:57 PM

mmmm Chicago Diner rool: mmmm

I lived in Chicago in Andersonville for 2 years, I worked in the west loop. I grew up in Munster Indiana, which is 30 miles from the Chicago loop. Northwest Indiana the red headed step child of Illinois and the hated ******* of Indiana.

I miss the city and all it's convenience!

Wiccanveg 07-17-2003 11:34 PM

I live in the edgewater area, and if anyone is up here, check out Alice and Friends on Broadway, down the street from Moody's pub. It's an incredible vegegarian cafe, most items are vegan and it tells which ones have whey powder and honey. Other favorite places include Amitabul, and definetly Soul Vegetarian tops the Chicago Diner.

I did my time in the 'burbs, decided my commute was too short, so moved to Streeterville (1.5 hour commute - all public transportation - woohoo!).

Wiccan, I love Alice and Friends. Their Full Moon Harvest ranks high up on my fav. foods of all time. One of my favorite places to eat was the Veg. Express Gourmet , almost an hour's drive away, but well worth it. I hear it's closed now

For non-vegan cheap eats in the city, there's the Olive Branch, off Wells & Ohio - their falafels are awesome. I can go on and on , but I'll stop.

Is anyone here signed up with the vegetarian group on meetup? I'd love to meet more veg-heads in the city!

carnelian 07-23-2003 12:58 PM

I'm going to the next Vegan Meetup (this will be my first one), which is being held at Chicago Diner from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on the patio on Saturday, August 2nd!

angelene17 07-26-2003 12:44 PM

I live in Great Lakes, which is about 45 minutes from Chicago....anyone know of any good restaurants to go to? I know of only one in Evanston.

Angelene, there's a lot of great veg. restaturants in the city. Blind Faith in Evanston is a good one, but the newest one that everyone raves about is Alice & Friends - it's off Broadway, in Uptown Chicago. There's Karyn's corner, which is awesome. Chicago diner ... well, I could go on and on. I'm sure there's a list somewhere.

You should come to one of the meetups here . We'll fill your head full of restaurant info.

Michael 07-28-2003 03:04 PM

And Soul Vegetarian.

GhostUser 08-31-2003 12:27 PM

Hi All,

I wanted to let everyone know about a new animal advocacy group (modeled after Compassion Over Killing in DC) that is in Chicago.

www.ProtectingAnimals.org

is our website and we are focusing on spreading vegetarianism in as many positive ways as possible!

We are always looking for volunteers for our tabling events and are hoping this will be a great way to get veggies to meet other veggies in Chicago as well.

annabanana 09-01-2003 02:06 PM

Any people from Elmhurst around here? Besides me, of course

GhostUser 09-03-2003 01:04 PM

I didn't even know this Illinois page was here! Hello! I live in Hoffman Estates (west burbs) but I just moved from Forest Park. Carnelian - you by any chance work at Whole Foods? I talked to someone there many months ago who noticed I bought all vegan food and told me that she was going to the Vegan Meetup. I never made it, mostly because I have been busy, though I was planning on going this Saturday in the the NW burbs.

I have been to Chicago Diner and the Evanston restaurant (forgot the name) Loved them both. There is also a veg restaurant in Arlington Heights called Amitubal or something similar and I heard good things even from omnis about that place. It is vegan friendly. My hubby is going to take me there for my birthday a few months down the road!

It's cool to know that many of us really aren't far at all!

Faery Girl 09-03-2003 03:17 PM

Hi!

We're visiting my husband's family in Illinois in a few weeks...they live in Oreana, but we have family in Decatur and Bloomington as well...

anyone know of any vegan friendly places in those areas? even just a health food store? my mom in law loves to cook for us, and there are a few things she's going to need...and I'd rather not have to schlep stuff on the plane!

thanks all!

The average American has no idea what a factory farm is

The place in Evanston is the Blind Faith Cafe! Their food is awesome - but a little expensive. Vegetarian Times listed them as Best Veg Resturaunt in the Country.
