I am moving to Banning in a couple of months and trying to find the closest TJ's. I don't think they have one in Palm Springs or Moreno Valley. They have one in Riverside but it is about 40 miles away...

All my friends are married! Ha! But, seriously though, it depends on what you're looking for.

Hey CaptainSwab--

Did you get a teaching job where you're moving to? I haven't visited the hamsters so I have no idea what's going on with you.

and...

yay! The school year's over! I'm thinking of taking a little road trip, and I want to go somewhere I haven't gone, which is hard if I'm going to stay in CA. I want to take my bf up to see the Winchester house because he's never been there, so is there anything in that direction that I should check out?

I need to pull out my maps... there's some caves I want to check out, too, if I can convince my bf that spelunking does not equal death. I'd like to go up to Lava Beds, but we're going to Thailand for a month so I don't think my bf can take off enough days to make that worthwhile. Hmm....

Anyone got some road trip destination ideas? I actually took a road trip to the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota, so no destination is too bizarre.

Yep. I have been teaching a 5/6 grade special ed class in Banning. Last day of school was last wed so I am on break! whoo hooo!

We are living in Riverside currently and my husband is working in Palm Springs so we can't wait until we move because it will cut both of our driving times down!

Hmmm. As for a trip destination. Is your bf active? When I was an undergrad I did a trip with the adventure club. We went to the Colorodo river about 9 miles downstream of Hoover damn. We canoed up stream to a nice campground and stayed a couple of days. This campground was within hiking distance to some really nice hot springs and if you paddle another mile or so upstream (as far as you can get to the damn before they rope it off) there are these sauna caves. These caves are crazy. You walk in and you don't even know you are sweating it is so hot. Then when you wipe your hand across your forehead, you realize you are dripping with sweat.

Well, then again, now that I think about it, it might be too hot for that...

You can always go camping in Sequia. We always like that.

Have you been running lately? Is your knee still bothering you when you do?

Oooh nice. My husband and I went to UCSB and used to drive around up there all the time. We liked playing in the river.

Well, it's here. Are there NO Angelenos going to this thing? I skipped tonight, but I have a weekend pass, so I will pretty much be at the Westin LAX from tomorrow morning through Sunday night, other than to come home and catch a few Zs.

If anyone here is planning to attend, PM me.

Editors' Note: On this page in our July, 2004, issue we published a review of Vegan Tokyo Teriyaki Restaurant in Los Angeles. We are sorry to report that this excellent restaurant has closed its doors. They will be missed.

Oh damn! I never even got to eat there!

Oh, sorry I didn't mention this when it happened over a month ago!

I ate there all the time, as it was the only vegan restaurant within shouting distance of my 2nd job. It was pretty good, cheap food, but it wasn't convenient enough for the average person to go if he or she didn't live or go to school in the area, so I guess they couldn't afford to keep it open.

Fortunately, new vegan restaurants are opening all the time. Three of the newer restaurants:

Madeleine Bistro

Vegan Glory

Leaf

And California Vegan opened another location, this time in West L.A.

My bf's aunt started a vegan thai food business over in Thailand and she brought over cans and bottles of the stuff and no one could tell the difference between hers and the meat (in fact, I couldn't eat the fish ones because they were too much like fish).

It was super spicy, though. It took me about an hour to get through a full serving and I was crying and sniffing by the end, but it was soooo good.

I've gotten pretty good and ordering my Thai food vegan at the local Thai restaurants, but it'd be nice to not always have to ask for modifications. I just might drag my boyfriend out there this weekend...

Hey I'd be glad to. Events are my speciality! I LOVE planning stuff, that's why I asked, but I just didn't wanna take away someone else's job.

Where do these things usually take place?

When I registered last December, some people were talking about a SoCal meetup, but it never materialized. I think they had at least one get together before, but a long time ago. So we could pretty much start from scratch.

Bless you! I was hoping someone who enjoyed this sort of thing would run with it. I posted a few convenient suggestions in your veggie patch thread...

You are Invited to an Evening with

The Buffalo Field Campaign, August 28

Dear Amy,

During the winter, buffalo in Yellowstone National Park migrate outside the park's boundaries in search of food. When they cross into the state of Montana, they enter a conflict zone where politics clash with their survival needs.

Please join them on August 28 for a multimedia presentation, a silent auction, and yummy vegetarian cuisine. You can hear first-hand accounts and watch compelling video footage from the frontlines.

Date: Sunday, August 28, 2005

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Where: Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Museum

Address: 7248 Owensmouth Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91303

(North of Sherman Way, between Topanga Canyon Blvd. and Canoga Ave.)

Suggested Donation: $15*

R.S.V.P.: (818) 341-2461 or [email protected]

*All donations to The Buffalo Field Campaign go to their frontline efforts to protect the last wild buffalo herd and their ecosystem.

Hey folks.

I'm moving to Los Angeles (Santa Monica) from NYC on 8/11, and I was wondering if anyone new of any good restaurants in that area (I won't have a car, so I'm quite limited)? Also, any advice on things to do/places to meet people would be much appreciated. Hopefully all of you are doing well
