former flagstaff-inian i am!
i'm an hour south of tuscon!
Formerly Tempe/Glendale/Scottsdale/and Phoenix.
All in a year and a half!
I live VERY close to the Tempe/Phoenix border.. In phoenix.
I live in flagstaff.
i should have visited fafafrappy while i was in Phx, i was staying with my brother who is about a mile away from ASU.
Oh cool stuff, majake! When was this? I live about 5-10 minutes from ASU.
are you at NAU, glimmer? i was in the parks and rec program there for a while. and forestry. good stuff!
it was just last week fafafrappy.
Funkified,I'm starting in the fall and am majoring in parks and rec. What did you think of the program?
they have one of the best in the country. i started out with Forestry as my major there, and that's the best in the nation. the parks and rec is good.but wasnt what i was looking for. it's more geared toward commercial recreation.
what will your emphasis be? wildland management was mine, but it just wasnt focused enough for my liking. i guess it was all to people oriented and i wanted something more conservtation -wise.
it's a great school though, and the area is awsome. how long have you been living there?
Wow, glad there's an Arizona board. I live in Tempe....and I need advice and recommendations on eating veg when going out. Where do you like to go/favorite foods eating out? The only one that is a total no brainer to me is Olive Garden (I'm only going lacto ovo veg for now). I was there for my birthday and I never realized how much of their menu is already veg or could easily be.
I live right next to phoenix.
Angel, There aren't many real "sit down" resturants that i can think of that serve veg'n food, Olive Garden is the only one that comes to mind.
BajaFresh and Fazoli's are "semi fast food" places that have many veg'n options. I like BajaFresh, they serve real "sit down resturant" style food in big servings, at inexpensive prices.

The beans and rice and do not contain any chicken broth. The guacamole does contain dairy products but the tortillas do not have any dairy.
All of their bagels are vegan, except for the honey wheat and the sun dried tomato (contains cheese).
Burger King has become the first fast-food chain to introduce a veggie burger in all its outlets nationwide. This is a HUGE step forward for animal rights and a massive boon to vegetarianism. Burger King has just become the most widespread source of vegetarian food in the country. Please visit Burger King and pick one up - but be sure to order it without the mayo. (You can ask them to microwave it so that it is not cooked on the same grill as the meat burgers.) Also, the fries are cooked in vegetable oil.
Carlos O'Brien's Mexican Food Restaurants
I have been alerted that their tortillas contain lard.
"Their tortillas, black beans, rice, guacamole and salsas (hot, medium corn and mild) are vegan. They actually run some in-store ads stating that these items are 100% animal ingredient free, which I find very refreshing and should be commended. I also, know the manager of the GIlbert location and he assured me of this as well." Thanks to Jeremiah McElwee for this info!
I have been alerted that they use whey in their bagels.
- Bagels w/ PBJ
- Red beans & rice soup
I have been alerted that the beans contain lard and the rice contains chicken stock.
I have been alerted that they use eggs in their pasta.
None of their items are vegetarian! Everything is cooked with chicken broth. Please contact them and ask them to offer vegetarian options. You can call them toll-free at (800) 877-8988 or to submit an e-mail comment, click here.
Papa John's Pizza
a cheese-less veggie pizza is vegan. The garlic dipping contains lecithin and lactic acid from unspecified sources. Click here for locations.
Pei Wei - this info was verified by their corporate chef
The "Dark Sauce" is made with chicken stock and chicken base in the recipe. (The Pad Thai Sauce makes an excellent substitution for Kung Pao Style dishes.) The sauces below can be substituted in other dishes to make them vegan. There is no chicken stock on the wok line, they use a vegetable stock. Dishes that would be vegetarian with vegetables and tofu:
Spring Rolls, Edamame, Pad Thai (modify when ordering "without eggs"), Blazing Noodles - as they are, Orange Peel - modify when ordering "without Kung Pao Sauce", Hoisin Explosion, Asian Coconut Curry, Soba - Miso, Sweet and Sour, Teriyaki
Rubio's Baja Grill
vegan "Health-Mex" burrito with beans and rice. Watch out for the nonfat chipotle white sauce and the salsa "fresca" - both contain dairy. The guacamole is vegan, though.
the white bread is vegan, but the wheat bread contains honey. (Check individual location ingredients to be sure.)
the beans and tostada/taco shells are vegan, the flour tortillas contain mono- and diglycerides from an unspecified source, but are otherwise vegan.

"The products on our menu that are listed (we use the Chinese symbol for vegetable on the menu for all of our vegetarian items) as vegetarian contain no animal products...this includes the new products we just added...in the past we had a couple of items like the vegetable lettuce wrap that were not designated as vegetarian either because they contained chicken stock or oyster sauce...recently we have replaced chicken stock with a vegetable stock and developed a vegetarian oyster sauce...all of our products that are listed as vegetation are in fact vegetarian."

isn't everything at olive garden meat based?
btw is ther anyone from tucson here? my hubby and i would like to host a vegan potluck and meet some other local veggies! (please pm me!)
Very cool to see a AZ board here!!
By the way, for anyone that like's spicy curry dishes, I Highly recommend Malee's on Main! Very good food! They also understand what Vegan means, (which is a comfort to myself) they have all different sauces and juices and even a differenct grill they use when you request a vegan dish! (have a friend that works there and got the full "vegan" tour 8) )
I live very close to this place and eat there so much they know my damn name lol
Nice list though! I'm gonna have to check some of these other place's out!
Hrm, I don't really go out to eat much anymore. Maybe I should try out more veg restaurants here! I've never been to an all veg restaurant.. The closest I've been to is Sweet Tomatos... And that's really yummy!
Go support your local co-op! Gentle Strength Cooperative is on University and Ash, just one block west of Mill Ave. in Tempe.
They make all sorts of vegan friendly pastries and foods, and have a cafe with great stuff. And a deli with terrific sandwiches, made fresh every morning. And a very aware staff.
Go! Now! And become a member too...you can volunteer a few hours a week, and get 25% off the store.
haha, of course you plug Gentle Strength!!
I didn't know about the volunteering thing!! Maybe I should do that! hmmm...
I haven't even been there yet!
Hm... no one has been posting here..
come on, I KNOW there are more AZ VBers!!
Oh, vegan friendly restaurant I want to mention: My Big Fat Greek Restaurant.
I loove their falafel, hummus, and salads (w/o feta of course) and the owners REALLY are Greek. It is on Mill and 6th, just north of University..
<plug for MOP>it's close by Gentle Strength Co-op, so you can stop by there, as well. </plug for MOP>

I live about 15 minutes west of Tempe, in south Phoenix
i was born in phoenix/lived in glendale
That's awesome I just moved here about 10 months ago for college. I go to UAT which is at 48th ST & Baseline Rd. How do you like living here? I like it a lot, it's a big change from where I'm from originally(Michigan). It's hella hot in the summer though, don't know how anyone can stand it I try to do everything I need to do outside at night in the summer LOL.
Wow. I live on 48th St. and Southern! hehe.
I do like living here a lot, but I agree. It's too bloody hot!!!
The nights have been nice lately.
I will be attending a college in the Fall. I am still undecided! I may ease into things with community college.
I'm at 27th Ave & Southern, small world huh Don't worry bout being undecided, I'm still undecided. My first year of college, I went to a university in Minnesota to play hockey. I decided I didn't want to do that, so I moved to the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. It was too expensive to live there, so I moved back home to Michigan and went to a community college there, then I moved here finally. I'm in a video game design program here, but again, I'm not sure if that's what I wanna do At least I enjoy living here though. Sadly, the school is mostly nerds who think they are better than everyone else. Not that there's anything wrong with nerds, but I hate people who think they're better than everyone. Annoys the hell out of me lol.
hah! yeah. Small world.
I plan on majoring in Music Ed, with a minor in Chicano studies (maybe spanish, as well). So ASU would be a good choice. Though I may go to Mesa Community to get all my academic credits out of the way.
BTW, I have lived here for about 16, almost 17 years!
Music would be a fun major, do you play any instruments? I play a little bass guitar, but I'm still pretty bad at it It's really fun to play though. Mostly just play Bob Marley or Dave Matthews Band stuff.
Community college kicks ass Some of the best teachers I've had were at the community college I went to.
The nights have been awesome lately, hope they stay like this most of the time. It works out good cuz I'm a bit of an insomniac lol. Always been a night owl
Actually, I sing, and I play the violin. I am going to specialize in voice.
Eh, we'll be lucky if the nights stay like this. They're GORGEOUS right now, and it will be nice for my graduation.
I am a night owl, too! Especially in the summer.
That's really cool I'm the worst singer in the world
Dave rocks, they got a concert here in August I'm gonna try to go to. I think it's on the 24th. Hopefully it's not sold out yet, but last time I checked it wasn't. The good seats are probably all taken though
Haha. I'm sure you're not that bad!
There are several concerts I want to go to! Well, okay, I have like 3 in mind.
Nice I don't know of any other concerts going on this summer, I should check it out. The last one I went to was at the theater at ASU(can't remember the name of it). Was a band called Galactic. I'd never heard em before, but they were really really good. Surprisingly, it was one of the best concerts I've been to. Can't beat the David Gray concert I went to before that though
I suppose a bit of practice would help my singing skills(or lack of), but my roommates already think I'm crazy for being a vegetarian lol. I'd probably scare em with my singing. They'd think a wildebeast was loose in the house
Any other Tucsonans here?
Hell, even I could teach you to sing. And I wouldn't make you pay me. hehe.
EVeryone thinks I'm pretty crazy for being vegan. Oh well... maybe I am
Have you heard of The Format?
Bad Shoe is a local band that is really good, too!
Does anyone live near Pima? I don't live in Arizona, but i'd like to know what it's like there because i'm probably going to be moving sometime. I heard that Arizona gets monsoons. Is the weather there bad at all and do they get anything like tornadoes? I just want to know because i'm terrified of tornadoes.
Arizona never has, and never will get tornadoes. Just to assure you... Unless the world is ending or something. hehe.
We do get dust devils, which are kinda like tornadoes... They aren't powerful enough to suck anything other than dirt and random small debris, so no need to worry.
Yeah, there are monsoons. But they're not terrible, IMO. But that could be because I love storms. Just some dust storms, thunder, lightening, some rain... The monsoons aren't bad really.
Most days here are bright and sunny! I love it here, although I hardly ever go outside in the daytime. ;P
If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help
Hey--I'm moving to Phoenix on August 30th!!! We just bought a house in Peoria by the Terramar Elementary school. Anyone live near there? Seemed a bit hot when I was visiting last week...I was almost crawling...
What about Extreme Pita? Is that vegan?
