A brief summary on Salon.com of a study indicating that using sex to get attention for ethical causes does not gain supporters for those causes, it only gets attention. The study specifically analyzed the use and results of ad campaigns PETA used:

I've been saying this for years. Getting attention is only half the battle, if the attention you get is mostly negative and makes people take you less seriously it can't be considered effective advocacy for the animals.

Life is Most Important.

We can't respect another by helping them to disrespect their own self.

That survey study is nonsensical. The goal of shock advertising is not to get the person viewing the ad to support the source but to notice the message. I think PETA is quite effective at getting their message across even if I do not always agree with the way in which they do it.
