A wee bit over 4 years. Don't remember the exact date for sure. It was during the lunar new year holidays of 2005. Dogs have been vegan for nearly four years now.

Approx 10-years. It took me 5-years to phase out meat, then after 5 more years of being veggie, went full vegan, about 1999.

It has been 2 years as of the end of January 2009. I wish I could remember the exact date; I remember the day quite clearly. I went to a health food store with my parents and made sure everything I bought was vegan.

Well, let's see...I'll just go into the whole story lol.

I was vegetarian from around age 11-12 (not sure which to be honest) to 17, then vegan until 19. Soon after I found out I was pregnant and went back omni, yes I know it wasn't a good excuse at all. After my son was born I went vegan again for almost a year (almost a year). Found out I was pregnant with my daughter, went omni again...still not a good excuse. And now I've been vegan for 2 months.

So altogether I've been vegetarian 5-6 years total and vegan a little over 3 years total.

Choosing to not be vegan during my pregnancies was my own fault and I look back and regret it. At the time I didn't feel I knew enough about vegan nutrition during pregnancy.

2 years and three months

(Vegetarian for over seven)

Chrilynhawk, can I ask you, what made you decide to switch to an omni diet during your pregnancies? Were you concerned of not getting enough nutrients? Or did you have really big cravings for meat/dairy? I am still a couple of years away from wanting to have a child myself so I haven't really researched this topic at all, but I always assumed one could be vegan during pregnancy too? I am not asking this to be judgmental in any way. I am just curious as to what real people's experiences have been with pregnancy and veganism as opposed to just reading nutrition books.

As I said, it was mostly my lack of knowledge on the whole thing. I would have researched it online, but during both times I didn't have any computer access (and at that time I also didn't have a car so I couldn't go anywhere like the library). I think vegan pregnancies, in fact I know vegan pregnancies, can be absolutely healthy. I just wasn't comfortable in my personal knowledge of it to try it. And though it doesn't make me feel any better, I did eat mostly vegetarian/vegan during both of the pregnancies. The majority of my cravings were for things like olives lol.

It's kind of in the way I didn't go vegetarian until I was comfortable knowing about it, and the same for vegan. I made sure that I knew the ins and outs of the nutrition of it all before diving in because I wanted to be sure I was eating properly. But with going through a time with no internet access or really even access to proper books...I just wasn't comfortable with it. Looking back could I have found a way to read up on it? Probably. But the past is the past and I can't change it.

I went vegan on January 1, 2005! Over 4 years and damn proud. However, I did have a couple of accidental non-vegan work my way into my mouth. I am alyz learning though. But this year will be better!! Congrats to everyone else who made it far!

You should read the book: Skinny ***** Bun in the Oven. I started reading it and I love it. I am not pregnant but want to have kids someday and this book definitely gives you all the information you need to be vegan while pregnant. I highly recommend it. I know several women who have been vegan while pregnant. There's some threads in VB to read about...

Well done!! MrFalafel

I am really worried about being total vegan and select as many vegan products as possible

What do you eat in a typical day/week? foods you prehaps rotate?

I was a vegan from around 14-17 for health reasons (I'm 23 now). I became a vegan again, for ethical reasons, almost 6 months ago.

I have yet to meet those who have been vegan since conception/birth. I read some great articles in VegNews awhile back and it was very interesting!!!
