Would you still be vegan? Or would you eat (unfertilised) eggs?

I think it would be vegan to keep them there...nothing wrong with that. However eating the eggs is NOT vegan. Doesn't matter where they come from, how they are prepared, they are eggs still. Vegans do not eat anything that comes from an animal. ANYTHING. :-) I'm sure others however have a different opinion on keeping the chickens in your backyard. But hey, you're on VB! So you are surely someone who would not be cruel to them. I'm sure you keeping them would give them a better home and would protect them from being tortured.

What I was trying to ask with that badly worded post was if you kept chickens so you knew they were raised in a nice environment and were cruelty/chemical free etc. etc. would YOU go back from being vegan and eat some eggs.

Is this another "abortion" thread???

*Mr. Sun tries to focus*

Ok, well, it seems we just had a thread like this called "vegan eggs". Just scroll down a bit. Anyway, it seems I ended that thread with this insightful post:

The reasons I have for rejecting such measures for obtaining b12 should lead me to also reject using the descendants of birds who were originally tamed for such purposes (nutrition for humans). With those options off the table I have to find a way to live without using birds.

And I also should continue to influence others to not exploit birds if I feel there is something wrong with it.

I really love chickens, and I do hope to get some rescued hens some day. But no, I would not eat their eggs. I would rather give them to my mum to stop her from buying factory farmed eggs.

I used to absolutely love eggs, and they were actually the thing I missed most when I first went vegan, but now just the smell of them makes me feel physically sick, I couldn't imagine eating them ever again, no matter how ethical they were.

The eggs you buy in the store are unfertilized.

I do keep chickens in my back yard. Except that I don't have a back yard. Or chickens.

Now I feel kinda bad for the OP, and I think I kinda started it. Sorry.

Sometimes it is hard to do a search for related threads. This was just so funny, though, because the thread started like 15 hours after the last one on the exact same topic died. And I don't think this topic is as common as "do vegans eat honey" and "do vegetarians eat fish".

Oh, never mind. She started the thread 17 hours ago and hasn't been on-line for 17 hours. She has no idea we're making fun of her thread. Let the merry-making continue. No, not really.

Yes really. Enough of that touchy-feely "sorry" stuff and on with the newbie-bashing. You know you want to.

Again I wouldn't eat the eggs because they have the highest cholesterol of any food and I don't wanna die of a heart attack at 55 =o)

<ignores other posts>

We actually have a few rescued hens and 2 ducks, all from the shelter in our town, they were confiscated from a man who wasn't taking care of them properly.

Now they live really happy lives & the eggs arn't fertilized so we usually give them away, my mother keeps a few for her and the rest of my family to eat. I won't eat them but I figure giving them away isn't a bad thing, if they're eating ones from our chickens (who arn't from a factory farm, who are/seem really happy) instead of factory farm eggs. I'm sure I'll get a lot of crap about this but, oh welllll.

I'm not understanding why you think that the eggs being unfertilized means anything.
