So, just had a health screen and blood profile....

Hello all, just had an employer health screen at work with interesting results.

First, wanted to list blood test results from last year before I turned vegan and was still doing keto:

Total cholesterol: 255 mg/dL
HDL: 55 mg/dL
LDL: 183 mg/dL
Triglycerides: 85
Glucose: 81

Now, today's results after almost 3 months of being vegan:

TC: 156
HDL: 48
LDL: 87
Tri: 104
Glucose: 82
Blood Pressure: 112/70

I was pretty shocked to see my total cholesterol drop so much without drugs. My doctor last year wanted to put me on statins. I do exercise but not much different from when I was doing keto.

I thought it amusing the nurse told me my cholesterol might be a bit low, and that I should stop eating too much carbs like rice and maybe eat eggs or meat once in a while. I also thought it funny she told me no other society in history exclusively ate vegan

There is still room for improvement though. My triglycerides are a bit high and LDL target for me is less than 70. But keep in mind I have not been a 'perfect' vegan. I still eat quite a bit of vegan junk food like chips, fries, and sweets like Oreos, and candies. I also consume my fair share of vegetable oils which might be upping my triglycerides.

But overall I am ecstatic to see such an improvement from simply not eating any meat, dairy, eggs. Vegan on!!!

Congratulations! It's wonderful that you won't have to go on statins. I had a similar experience when I first went vegan. I don't have the exact numbers, but my total cholesterol went from 170-something to 130-something in less than a year and a half of being vegan. And it continued to drop; my total cholesterol was around 120 mg/dL last year. I haven't had my checkup yet this year.

I wouldn't worry about having too little cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic article entitled "Cholesterol Level: Can It Be Too Low?" (please Google it; I'm new here and still unable to post links), you don't have to worry about your cholesterol being too low until you reach an LDL of 40 mg/dL. Even then, low cholesterol has only been associated with health problems "in rare cases." Furthermore, that apparent association is not well understood. The low levels of cholesterol that were associated with disease in those "rare cases" may have been caused by the disease, rather than being a reason for the disease.

congratulations - those are awesome number changes and if you do decide to cut out some of the cookies, chips and oils and then have another test, please do share the results... I love statistics...

Thank you poivron, and thank you for the link. I'm hoping to get even better results as time goes on and low cholesterol does not seem to be as bad as some think.

I thought it interesting that the nurse that was discussing the results with me seemed so eager to get me off being vegan by saying I should eat meat and eggs once in a while.

Thank you Spudulika, I was so excited when I got those results. High cholesterol has plagued me throughout much of my adult life, and I truly thought it was a lost cause and would eventually need to go on statins. I hope to get even better numbers as time goes on.

I don't like dealing with health professionals that don't study up before advising

I would take what most healthcare providers say with a grain of salt. The China Study (a wide reaching collaborative research study with American and Chinese researches) really helped me understand how little most American doctors and nurses know about the health benefits of veganism. It is something you can Google, but most of the information is in a book. I got the book through Audible, but I think paperbacks are available online.

HDL is the "good" cholesterol. More than 50 mg/dL is recommended. Less than 40 mg/dL could be dangerous. Keep an eye on it.

Have you read The Engine 2 Diet, Plant Strong, and The Engine 2 7 Day Rescue, all by Rip Esselstyn? I've gotten all three from the library (616 section, the area dealing with health and nutrition, not that I spend a lot of time in the library or anything). They are all oil free. Good luck with everything.

Anytime I think I'm perfect, I remember that my cousin lives on an island, and I've never walked over to visit her.
