I've finally cut dairy out of my diet once and for all (yaaaay), so I thought I'd take a look Forks over Knives and Vegucated.

After watching them I'm even more confident that cutting out dairy was the right thing to do, however it does make me wonder where I can get hold of the sources for some of the information in these movies. 

I want to have a better reply to people than "I saw it in a movie" when they ask for proof that a plant based diet is better, can anyone point me towards sources or references?

China Study is a good one, lots (hundreds) of references to solid scientific papers.

NutritionFacts is great if you want bits and pieces to chew on over coffee. The doctor that runs that site does little videos on health topics and cites his sources and links to them in the little 'sources' thing under the video pane. So you can do a search for milk, watch relevant sounding vids, and then double check the science for yourself if you like.

I had a debate with a scientist that claimed that the whole documentary was bs. Gave me medical links that claim that fruits and veggies don't affect the alkalinity of your blood or the ph of your blood. She gave me links to sites that had doctors and other scientists claiming that the only thing effecting the acid level of the blood are things like exercise and too much of it. Do i believe in what she says? no. I was told by another friend that was talking about it to "stop fighting" with the scientist because "she is a scientist and she knows what she is talking about" ::rolls eyes::

Read "The China Study", the documentary really doesn't do justice to the underlying ideas.

As for the blood thing, I don't think that is clear cut but it doesn't matter too much. One shouldn't get blogged down on very particular claims, the overall theory is rather strong even if some of the details are wrong. It would be very surprising if the plant-based advocates got everything right....that just doesn't happen in science.


As a side note, it should be kept in mind that these guys aren't just talking about any old "plant-based diet", instead a whole plant-based diete.

You can also talk about the ethical choices you make, it beats any scientific facts! I'm vegan out of compassion for other beings, may they be animals or human (if you buyfair trade). Pretty hard to fight against that, it's like trying to argue against someone religious, you can't fight faith, it's too personal.

Be careful you don't take some of these studies at face value.. the experimental design behind quite a few of them doesn't allow them to make the conclusions they do. Don't go flaunting it at scientists is all I'm saying haha.

My decision was also an ethical one but most meat eaters tend to ignore the ethics of killing animals for food, when I became a vegetarian it was after reading an article by Mary Midgley in which she asked her readers if they could give one moral reason why eating meat is acceptable if you have the choice to do otherwise.

Her challenge stumped me! I've since asked many people if they could take up the challenge and they've all dodged the issue.

If people don't seem to care about the welfare of animals perhaps they will care about their own enough to stop eating meat.

I totally get where you're coming from, that's another reason why I wanted the resources posted up by the kind folks above me, so I could look into the facts a bit more. I know better than to argue with a scientist haha
