I am a new vegan and would appreciate hearing about your favorite or go-to sources of protein! Thanks.

Me? I love Tofu and also Quinoa.

Tofu I find is the best thing in a fast veggie stir fry, so easy too, just finely slice whatever veg. you have to hand and toss everything in a wok. And now I've also discovered 'scrambled tofu' which again is a fast, easy and tasty way to get a protein fix. There's a whole recent thread on scrambled tofu on here.

Quinoa is a super easy protein source, just use it like you would rice or couscous alongside curries, roasted vegetables or lentil & veggie stews, or in salad with diced salad veg. & a simple dressing. If I'm feeling really lazy, Quinoa salad is my go-to lunch or supper. Threads on Quinoa here too.

Recently I've also bought a bag of TVP mince (also known as 'textured vegetable protein') which is dead cheap, easy to store (it's dehydrated - so needs soaking before use) and simple to use as a substitute for meat mince in chili's, ragu's, lasagne etc. I'm gonna make faux meat loaf tomorrow with it. And there's threads on TVP.

Tofu, edamame, almond butter, quinoa, lentils, mushrooms, texturized vegetable protein (in replace of ground beef, like in tacos, or sometimes I add it to whatever else I'm cooking at it absorbs any flavor and adds extra protein, like in stir frys or even in oatmeal) and hummus :)

Oh man and my favourite protein packed breakfast is quinoa with a mashed banana, a bit of almond butter and a splash of almond milk. Warm or cold. So good.

Legumes ( all king of beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas, ...) cereals ( whole wheat; brown rice, kamut, spelt, millet,...), tofu, tempeh; seitan

You can eat also nuts butter ( almond, peanut, hazelnut, pumpkins, sunflower seeds) and nuts.

Dried fruits and seeds.

Beans, chickpeas, quinoa, and nut butters!  drool.gif

As with all foods, find a bunch of protein sources you like by experimenting with recipes.  That way you can make sure you get a nice variety!

I like any beans that don't tend to be musical. I try to avoid the musical ones...I hate them, I really do, plus you feel bloated sometimes and it's just ugh. V_V

Has it been long enough since the last time I posted this that I can post it again without being a spammer?

So, anyway, as Jack says, proteins give energy to everything from flowers and butterflies to heroes who turn in communists. (Although I think "give energy" is a little bit vague and not-quite-right. I suppose you could say enzymes "reduce the activation energy necessary for important reactions" rather than "give energy," but structural proteins like collagen are probably best not thought of in energy terms at all. I've gotten all off-topic anyway.)

Anyway, I don't think butterflies and heroes who turn in communists are vegan. Flowers are, although they might be a little low in protein even if they have some.
