This happened to me too. I stopped eating soy and wham. Gone. :) Now I eat a bit now and then but it's not a staple and it does me no harm!

Do you have any updates on this? I was just researching and was so thrilled to see this thread. Your situation sounds EXACTLY like mine! I went vegan about 3 months ago after being vegetarian for 3 years. My skin was never perfect but now it's the absolute worst it's ever been. People tell me to go on birth control but I'm adamant on not putting anything unnatural in my body.

I was so depressed today about my skin that I went to a neighborhood salon and met with an esthetician. He was wonderful & also concerned. After asking me questions about my skincare regimen, we got to diet & a lightbulb clicked when I said I recently went vegan. Once he started examining my skin, he concluded it was not cystic and it looks like my skin is purging - unfortunately on my face. He seems to think that my body initially didn't like the dairy, and now it has the perfect time to get it out of my system since its not busy breaking it down in digestion. Interesting, and makes sense! He seems to think we can get my skin beautiful again after a few peels... we will see! Just wanted to see if you determined a cause!

This is just pseudo-science, a salon isn't a place you should seek health information. Visit a dermatologists.

Increased acne after going vegan can be caused by low levels of vitamin D, if the acne outbreak is occurring in the winter that is the first thing I'd test. Vitamin D is synthesized in your skin when the sun hits the oils in your skin, low levels of vitamin D and cause your body to produce more oils in the hopes of synthesizing more vitamin D which can promote acne in sensitive individuals. For $4 you can rule this out, just get a vitamin D supplement at Target, etc and see if the acne improves.

Update:

 

My acne cleared up after maybe 9 months months of being vegan and using DeeVoo's vegan acne products from Etsy. I find now that the only time i break out with acne is during my TOM and after eating a lot of soy.

 

I had some blood tests done and found out I'm gluten intolerant and have leaky gut syndrome as well which has been causing me to get rashes and hives all over the past 4 months :(. (one thing to another, ugh)  So I've cut out gluten and now and going to try mostly raw - no gluten OR soy and see how that goes for my rashes. I'm told i have a highly sensitive immune system that attacks everything like an invader, but that's another story...

Anyone using honey, or Burt's bees is not vegan. I'm sorry but bees are animals too and are being decimated by the farming of their honey. If we are all on a plant based diet don't you think we should protect the species that pollinates our food?

Someone further up mentioned soy. And if you have been eating lots of soy, try cutting it out completely and see if it is maybe the culprit.

Thank you for your response on this! I actually visited a dermatologist & they wanted to put me on an oral medication, which I didn't want to do. The esthetician was for a second opinion. And as for the vitamin D, I take a D supplement daily, as well as visit a tanning bed once in awhile to keep my Ohio seasonal distress to a minimum. After bloodwork, I was not D-deficient. So that's not the culprit!

I am somewhat vegetarian, no dairy but an occasional egg. I have found that vitamin b12 supplements make me break out like crazy. Google it....you will fine a bunch of stuff connecting b12 to acne. I am new to all of this, does anyone know if there is a natural way to get b12 from a vegan diet?

I use nutritional yeast. I sprinkle it on dishes that usually require parmesan.

Other than that, you can get B12 from fortified cereals and alternative milks (like soy or almond). We don't need heaps of it to stay healthy, so if you've got these things already you 'should' be okay. That's about as natural as I've found it to be.


The only other things I can suggest for acne is to make sure you're using the right products for your skin type (you can go to a salon to find out exactly what you have and what you should be doing). I had really terrible, disgusting, skin. At one point, I was putting band aids over the worst of it because it was just disgusting.

But now, it's all pretty much in check because I follow a simple routine- Washing my face every morning and night, moisturising every time, sunscreen through the day and scrub twice a week. (Sukin, if anyone is interested in the product. It's completely vegan and they do body washes, shampoos and conditioners as well).

I can't quote zike, but I'm very relieved to hear that in my case breaking up after going vegan is only about too much B12. Because when I started vegan diet almost a month ago my skin was all good until I started taking this multivitamin with B2, B6 and B12. Daily values of those vitamins are 735%, 625% and 1666%. I was really worried that I was really going to get acne from going vegan, but this forum saved me. So now I stop taking this multivitamin and as soon as possible I'll get one with reasonable amount of B12 (and B12 only).

Hi!

 

The same thing happened to me.  I was a vegan for four months.  Never had acne but after I started on the vegan diet my skin was never the same.  I exploded with a horrible acne that I have to this day.  I went back to being semi-vegetarian to see if things changed for my skin and then finally started eating meat, but the problem still lingers.  I've tried A LOT of things from natural remedies to over the counter drugs but nothing has "cured" it.  After reading the soy thing, I think that might have caused it.  Does anyone know what could counteract the effect of soy in people who have developed acne from it?

I can say that I've had the opposite reaction. Since I have started cutting out dairy and eggs I have noticed my skin has gotten clearer. I'm 27 and I had always had bad skin, combination dry and oily with always redness and blemishes. Today is the first day ever that I have come to work with NO FOUNDATION on! My skin looks happy and I think it is a pleasant side effect of my new dietary habits. I haven't changed my face washing routine or anything, have never used birth control, so I am attributing it to the only thing that has changed recently, my new vegan eating.

I bought dermalmd acne serum for my teenage daughter who has a very small problem with acne one or two pimples pop up here and there in this spot treatment takes care of them within 48 hours very good little product and works well

Just because someone stops eating animal products does not mean that they have stopped eating inflammation causing foods, in fact some key anti-inflammatory nutrients are found in animal products namely omega-3s, they can of course be supplemented without breaking your diet, and yes inflammation is a key cause of acne. There are also a whole host of anti-inflammatory herbs and spices, I personally love turmeric, cloves, garlic, and rosemary, some of which have antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties as well, if you favor sweet over savory seasonings consider ginger and cinnamon. I would also eat more broccoli it is something of a skin superfood. I have noticed a considerable improvement in my skin since I had to start my anti-inflammation diet.
Other tips, avoid inflammatory foods, processed foods, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and any preservatives. Consider getting an allergy test, since going vegan you might have increased your intake a a food that you have a mild allergic reaction to, that will cause massive inflammation issues throughout your body, peanuts, soy, and gluten are common culprits.
Edit: if you don't want to change the seasoning of your food consider some of the herbal teas, ginger, green tea, chamomile, and turmeric tea all good choices. I personally like powdered ginger and cinnamon in a chamomile tea, they go very well together and gives you a whole host of different anti-inflammatory nutrients. You can also use anti-inflammatory tea as a topical treatment, works the same way on the outside as it does the inside it will reduce inflammation and many of which are anti-bacterial/anti-microbial as well. Dandelion Root tea is a traditional herbal remedy for acne, might consider giving that a try as well.

Great, great info. For me the rise of my sugar intake was the problem, I just had to learn how to equilibrate all. Also it's a hard change to your body, so it needs time.

Hi, I faced the same problem and everyone was telling me that it's my body's reaction for detoxification but it has lasted and lasted for so many months - about 4. I didn't have any of those problems before - I'm 25 right now. So I started to look for something. I tried D3 vitamin and tee tree oil, some face masks etc. About 5 months ago I came across curology revievs and I found that they suit me new way of life - vegan. I tried it and it's working I hope it's not like every other acne cosmetic which is going to work only for a wile and than I'd end up with acne breakouts again. Any of you used to use it and can say if it's getting rid of the problem or just covers it as long as you use it?
