A family member bought me a China-made item from Wal-Mart. What should I do? I know Wal-Mart's return policy is pretty lenient, but if I return it, will it be as effective as if it hadn't been bought in the first place, or is the money already on its way to the manufacturer (3 days), so nothing would change? Do you think it's too trivial to even matter? It's starting to sound like silly moral perfectionism, but I can't get it out of my head.

I don't think I have to worry about personal offense. The thing still has the tag, and I think I can get the receipt unless it's been trashed. He doesn't keep track of them and so won't notice if it's gone.

It would be rude to ask for the receipt to return it. If you hate it that much keep it for regifting or give it to charity.

Love the post? Why not buy the T-shirt!

I think the problem is that the money was used to buy an item made in China where the workers are most likely ill treated and payed very little, yes?

The purchase would not have triggered the payment. The manufacturer would have been paid when the shipment was exported or soon after.

Turn this negative situation into a positive by donating it.

Well yeah Walmart sucks. In this situation I would just say that you didn't pay for it so it's not like it's your money going to support it. Sounds dumb but I don't know what else to say.

This. The manufacturer had already been paid by the time the item was put on the shelf.

Return it, exchange it, donate it, regift it.
