Yeah I know vegan subsitutes will never taste as good as the real thing but dose this new daiya cheese everyones been raving about taste good on pizza by itself or dose it taste like well other vegan cheeses, in other words like poo?
Its been a long time since I last tried any vegan cheese, and can't remember which ones. They were awful, and the after taste was even worse. Play-dough comes to mind.
I tried Daiya based on the reviews here. I tried the mozzarella shreds on a homemade pizza. I have to say, it was really good! On the pizza, it did have a stretchy texture, and definitly took the place of regular cheese, like nothing else.
By itself, cold, it had a taste like a mild blue cheese. I want to make the chopped lettuce, apple, walnut salad and blue cheese dressing I always liked, with Daiya instead.
I think it's worth the price once in a while. At least it didn't make me crave real cheese, like I know the other "fakes" would.
I'm willing to try the cheddar in a baked mac & Daiya.
While it's not quite the same, it's pretty close. My biggest worry about imitations is sparking a craving. Daiya actually satisfied it instead.
In my opinion, it was no better than all the rest, maybe a little worse. I tried it on a pizza and the smell was a turn-off. One person said it reminded her of feet. After that comment, I don't think any of us could enjoy it. I tried it one more time and once again, the smell...!
I have not tried the Daiya cheese. I haven't seen it for sale in my area. I guess I'm not a fussy eater. I don't mind the vegan cheeses. I've never noticed a bad smell from vegan cheeses. Now I'll be worried if and when I try the Daiya cheese.
I loved the Daiya cheese. I'm sensitive to yeast, too, but haven't noticed a problem (yet- knock on wood). On the pizza, it was great, the trick is, to cook the pizza for regular time on the middle shelf in the oven, then move it to the top shelf and flip the broiler on for 30-60 seconds to further melt the cheese and to give it some browning- uber cheesey goodness.
Wow there must be a really wide spectrum in the opinion of this cheese. I've heard that the stuff has tasted almost as good as real cheese and I've heard that the stuff tastes like feet.
LOL- there is a wide spectrum. It is different tasting, but I think it tastes great and as close to real cheese as I've tried. I have heard it's much better cooked and people prefer the mozzarella. I made an Italian-y casserole with it- using organic veggies, eggplant, squash, zuccini with Newman's Sockarooni spaghetti sauce- layering it with sauce, then veggie, then cheese, then repeat and covered the top with cheese and cooked the last bit under broil- it was so great, I could've licked the casserole dish clean. Maybe I'm easy to please? haha
I tried the Gardein mozzarella-stuffed chick'n, and disliked it. However, I don't know if it was the Daiya I disliked, or the sauce. It was kind of hard to tell in a prepared food...
I tried Daiya once (on a pizza) and thought it was just nasty. That said, I did heap a ton of it on there, like I used to do with dairy cheese, so that may have contributed to the grossness. Follow Your Heart "mozzarella" is way way waaaay tastier, imho.
I'm a new vegan (convert from vegetarian)as of a month and a half ago so the taste of cheese is still fresh in my mind. I've gotta say, it fixes my craving for cheese. I like it. I'm pretty lucky too, I live in Kansas City and my favorite local pizza place here has Daiya as an option on their pizzas.
I'll throw out my opinion. On pizza, it's absolutely fantastic. Saucy crust and Daiya were made for each other. On anything else, it's okay. It kind of tastes like Cheetos, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes you don't want your baked potato to remind you of the lunches your mom used to pack you when you were in elementary school.

Teese was like eating a stick of butter to me. And it melted and made a big pool of water on the pizza.
Daiya tastes much better to me, melts nicely and is by far the best vegan cheese I've tried.
I think it's a largely subjective thing though. There are people on VB who love Teese. There are others who love Vegan Gourmet. And there are others who love other kinds I've probably not seen or heard of. No one food is going to appeal to 100% of the populace at all times.
I use it on pizza all the time. Like one user said, don't pour it on the crust, just sprinkle it lightly over the pizza and then add your favorite toppings and its fantastic.
I wanted to like Daiya but found it gross. The texture is just not right and it had a faint, grayish cast to it (I used the mozzarella on my pizza). I ended up eating some it and gagging on it. The texture is just too gluey. I picked most of it off so I could enjoy the otherwise tasty pizza without the gagging.
